There was no reason for Edmure to subordinate himself to rob. None.

If he wasn't obeying the crown anymore he was essentially independent and therefore like a king.

Due to stupidity Edmure decided to follow Robbs "advice". However they were both kings after not recognising the iron throne, Robb as Warden of the North and Edmure Lord Paramount of the Riverlands, had no lord above them that they recognised.

It was the lords of the Riverland along with the North who declared Robb King in the North. Before that they hadn't decided whether or not to ally themselves with either of the Baratheon brothers. Also the Riverlands is surrounded on all sides and is sort of a natural warzone and has served as one for centuries. The War of the 5 Kings opens with the Riverlands being raided by Gregor Clegane and Lannister armies. They needed the armies of the North. Edmure was in no position to try and declare himself King over an important blood ally he desperately needed.

You have a point, it's basically like this.

Robb has declared a war for independance so he's now a king. Edmure is a lord paramount because he's supposed to be a vassal of the iron throne, but is in rebellion. So while neither of them are subservient to the throne while they are at war one of them has declared complete independance and the other one is just in rebellion. So technically edmure is still more like a duke.
