They could've worked with SO MUCH content following season 3's opener if they wanted to create a more continuous story.

They could've immediately dealt with the events after the intergalactic government fell down, sammy and phoenix's persons whereabouts which they teased at the end of that episode, or they even could've explored more of Rick's backstory for much better character development (since reddit is making the "it's for character development" excuse for these recent episodes being dull and boring). I mean, the old formula of R&M going on adventures across the multiverse would've been way more interesting.

Instead we get 2 of the episodes that have the least amount of jokes and the most 2smart4u writer self-insert moments. It's also fucking lazy how the only thing they can milk out of the therapist episodes was her also being into coprophagia counseling. The divorce overarching theme is the worst thing they've ever conceived for this show, even worse than the interdimensional cable episodes. It should've been a subplot for one episode at the very least.

In old episodes rick would NEVER go to a therapist, yet alone from earth, unless he himself chooses the therapist.
They would go to a therapist from space with the latest psychoanalysis device and things would go out of control from there.

On this note, I think they're really inconsistent with how they portray Rick. In some episodes, he's so jaded by his traveling through infinite realities that he doesn't care at all for his family and has zero moral compass. He's seen his family die or reach other bad ends so often he's numb to it. Rick fucked up one dimension with Cronenbergs? Fuck it, dimension hop leaving the rest of his family behind.

And in other episodes he's treated like the gruff grandpa that's bad at expression emotion but deep down has genuine affection for his family.

The switch between the two feels especially jarring. Like in the first episode of season 3, Rick murders countless iterations of himself and Morty, ending the episode with a monologue to Morty about how he orchestrated the whole thing to take over the family, how he only saved Morty so Beth would accept him, etc. "This will be the darkest year of our adventures yet".

Then two episodes later he's sitting in therapy.

I don't think the counselor herself or the female writers is the problem with the show right now.

The problem is the shift of focus to the family dynamic, with characters who were purposefully set up to be boring background characters who don't get involved. Nothing is interesting about Summer, she is literally every generic white teenage high school girl character.
Beth is your average bad alcoholic mother character.
Jerry was actually more interesting than both of them and he's been kicked off the show and ruthlessly made fun of despite doing nothing wrong, like the writers expect us to hate him for some reason.

And Morty is now unfeasable as a main character because he pisses himself in class, I will never care about this character again. May as well kick him out and let Jerry back in.

Also the show was fun before because it had all sorts of fun sci-fi concepts, the microverse battery, the car protecting Summer from the entire military nonlethally, the marriage counseling, having a hivemind for a girlfriend.
S3E1 delivered on the sci-fi fun but E2 was just fucking Mad Max with no laughs and nothing interesting aside from the arm, which was a short 2 minute subplot, and E3 was just a bunch of mindless violence with no laughs.
