So basically there are two ways to do time-travel (well, more, but two BASIC categories).
1. The future can be changed
2. The future cannot be changed.

In The Terminator, the future can't be changed. It's a predetermined paradox, a time loop, whatever you'd like to call it. It's the same deal as Twelve Monkeys and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. What is always was and always will be.

The Terminator is always sent back, Kyle Reese always volunteers to go back and stop it, Kyle Reese always fathers John Connor with Sarah Connor, Sarah Connor always gets her photograph taken by the little Mexican boy, and John Connor always gives that photograph to Kyle Reese, and Kyle Reese always falls in love with Sarah Connor, and Kyle Reese always volunteers to follow the Terminator back.

It's neat and it's perfect and it's awesome.

In Terminator 2, this is all ruined. This is why Terminator 2 is a wonderful film but a terrible sequel.
>>
>>86086666

perfect time loops don't prove 2, they simply avoid any paradoxes of 1. 2 is a deterministic Universe devoid of both free will and effect. For 2 to exist it must already have all time loops solved before you can "play the recording."

1 implies free will and meaningful choices. Hence "No fate but what we make."

I'm not disagreeing with you, time travel is fiction, I'm just providing analysis.

When will your grow out of your idiotic head cannon?

>>
>>86086752
In a couple of ways.

Firstly, the very fact that a T-1000 is sent back. It implies that the machines in the future somehow understood that the first Terminator had failed - and how could they gain such knowledge? Did they know immediately after sending the first one, because they didn't notice a change? And how were they able to send it at all if, as Kyle Reese states in the first, that the human resistance had won and that the original Terminator was the machines' last-ditch Hail Mary?

Secondly, the fact that they stop Judgment Day directly contradicts the established theory of the first film, being that the future is set. In Terminator 3 we discover that Judgment Day was merely postponed, but that's still a deviation, so a bit of a moot point.

>>86086797
Would you provide a link to that? Even if he did, that doesn't change what it is. The director/writer's motivation for the device's inclusion doesn't have any bearing whatsoever on whether the device is successful.
He was also a cyborg, not a robot.

>>86086870
Yeah, but if Judgment Day is averted or postponed then the closed-loop of the first film is shattered. It can't remain intact if the machines don't ever take over or take over six years later, which makes this a plot-hole. OP asked for "one thing wrong", and I'm giving it to him. Plot-holes shit me.
>>
>>86085676
I unironically cannot. odern movies just cannot compare to it, the action looks artificial and unrealistic. One scene of Arnie jumping down that canal on a chopper without moving a muscle shits all over the next three decades of action movie making and the opponents looks as if it is really a threat to the characters.

Think about it like Majora's Mask or the Stargate time loop episode or any of the many Star Trek timeloop episodes.

How many time loops was Earth trapped in? Did Terminator 1 happen 1,000 times? Were there slightly different versions of Terminator 1 until something happened to break the time loop?

The Terminators in 1, 2 and 3 were all sent in reverse order by the chronology of the films, so the T-X in 3 went back first followed by the first Arnie model the resistance were able to reprogram, then the T-1000 towards the middle of the war with the second reprogrammed T-800 and finally the 'original' Arnie Terminator from 1 was sent at the end of the war with Kyle Reese being sent by the resistance

Reese's speech to Sara (the one John made him remember) states the future isn't set. In T2 the "No Fate" thing implies change can happen.

>Kyle Reese states in the first, that the human resistance had won and that the original Terminator was the machines' last-ditch Hail Mary?
That the resistance knew about. SkyNet sent two terminators back through time (at the same time), one being Arny and the other, an alpha stage prototype (since we see T-1000 malfunctioning during the movie).

>>86087303
I haven't done Majora's Mask or Stargate but I have done every episode of all of the Star Trek series and I am well aware of the many, many plot-holes throughout it. Trust me, if you asked me to name flaws in those episodes I would also cite this same problem.

>Did Terminator 1 happen 1,000 times?
It happened (and happens) an infinite number of times. That's what a predetermined paradox is. At least, when it's done properly. And The Terminator was.

>>86087359
Putting aside the fact that this would be absolutely disgusting from any sort of consistency-standpoint, are you telling me that Skynet's machines grow steadily LESS advanced over the years?

>>86087495
>Reese's speech states the future isn't set. In T2 the "No Fate" thing implies change can happen.
Yeah, and Reese is wrong. Characters are allowed to be wrong. Reese also states that he has no idea how it works in the police-station. He was just repeating a line that Sarah told John told Reese told Sarah told John. It's denial, or it's delusion. The evidence presented in the first film renders him incorrect.

>SkyNet sent two terminators back through time (at the same time), one being Arny and the other, an alpha stage prototype (since we see T-1000 malfunctioning during the movie).
This actually does make it make more sense. Not enough to fix it, mind you, but it makes it a whole lot better. Was this established in a peripheral novel or comic or something?

It negates Kyle Reese's death and sacrifice. The first Terminator film actually had a deleted scene where Sarah suggests that they blow up Cyberdyne in 1984. Kyle says it's too risky, but in T2, they're all for it. Of course, they had a T-800 on their side to battle the T-1000.

If Marcus Wright had also been with Reese in the 1st Terminator film, then destroying Cyberdyne and assassinating its lead developers might have been more feasible. If the Villain T-800 shows up, Marcus can handle him better than Reese can.

Still, T2 is a solid action thriller while T1 is a great sci-fi slasher.

Because T2 is the movie Cameron wanted to make but couldn't at the time due to tech limitations. So instead we get a convoluted "energy created by living tissue" excuse as to why an unstoppable machine from the future had to wear an Austrian suit and carry no weapons.

This is also the reason why T1 and T2 are the same movie. Well, T2 is a soft-reboot of T1.
