Why does this sequence always completely fly over peoples heads? Anno has always made it very clear in interviews that he loves anime, but is also disgusted by it and the escapist mentality of otakus. Depression and running away from your problems is what Eva is about at it's core. In this squence the fantasy is inverted and the camera is turned towards the audience. I think here he likens anime and otaku culture to some kind of shared dream (instrumentality?). Like Shinji, otakus should wake up and face real people in the real world. It is up to ourselves. Do you want to dream? Or do you want to live?
