Yeah, they handled it a lot better in the books, but I guess it also makes sense that they reseted his development in the show.

In the books Euron is a serious danger and Young Griff adds complexity, while in the show Cersei is the only big antagonist left sans the Night King, so having Jaimie on her side was a good choice from dramatical POV ... unless you're a fan of him of course.

Jaime is honestly the best candidate for the throne. He ended the siege of Riverrun on diplomacy, he took Highgarden in what must've been a stroke of tactical brilliance, he brought Myrcella up from Dorne AND convinced Doran Martell to give them Tristane. He just can't stop being amazing.
