It's understandable why the media are circling the wagons on this one; nobody likes a path opening up to future litigation by rich folk (also Peter boy may be a total asshole for all I know). The main issue is that Gawker was clearly in the wrong both legally and morally and few people feel much sympathy for the rag. It makes their defenders seem disingenuously corrupt or just plain stupid in their attempts to "educate" the masses on the supposed danger to free press.
