1. Looming real world/force of nature disaster that humans are too petty to prepare for, to subvert the "everyone works together honorably against the forces of evil" bedrock fantasy theme

2. An easy out to avoid the ultimately irreconcilable positions of the main characters. IE if you have a greater threat suddenly your problems ain't so big and you can all come together with your medieval fantasy UN.
