Older Japanese versions weren't ever nuked, IIRC. It was always some kind of super-weapon like freeze bomb, or black hole cannon or micro-oxygen. Only US (stupid) 2014 version survived a nuclear blast.
Still, in general, Godzilla is big as carrier and test proofed that carriers are pretty nuke-resistant.

The fact that there were only 8 minutes wasn't a problem. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 was great and it had the shortest Godzilla screen time. The problem was that they would constantly set up cool fights with Godzilla and then cut away right as the fight started so that you didn't get to see it until the end of the movie. That and the boring marine man wasn't even a character so much as a narrative device to change the scene location because every movie needs to take place at 50 locations around the world these days.
