The walkers are a failsafe made by Bran via mind-time travel in collaboration with the children of the forest. Their purpose is simply to counteract/destroy Danerys's dragons, preventing them and her from ravaging the land with their flaming insanity.

The walkers and the dragons are meant to annihilate one another, like baking soda and vinegar, or wine and a good cheese. The end result is a land where neither force is a threat and civilization actually has a chance to progress.
