A hundred years from now, who do you think will be considered the greatest director for the first quarter of this century?
>>
Nolan
>>
the AI who rules humanity will have eliminated the inferior 'art' of the 21st century
>>
Definitely not an American or Brit
>>
PTA is a talentless hack who ripped Robert Altman's work off.
>>
Me, the viewer.
>>
In hundred fucking years the concept film will be regarded as outdated as a fucking horse and wagon is now. Everyone will be in vr and entertainment wont be needed because in vr our entire lives are entertainment. That, or movies games and vr will have merged into some sort of hybrid digital interactive choose your own adventure medium

the writings on the wall for film

No one but film nerds remembers Blake Edwards or John Ford and they were pretty much the Spielberg of their day and thats only like 50 years ago

Film is just a temp fad.

Interactive media like video games and VR are not rivals to film because they aren't storytelling media. Choosing your own adventure scratches a completely different itch to consuming a story crafted by someone else

>>85966139
That wasn't my fucking question, dipshits.
>>
malick

>>85966126
i just watched the long goodbye for the first time the other day and holy shit i felt like it was a PTA movie. inherent vice is literally just a remake of TLG
>>
>>85966562
Well the book Inherent Vice is also an homage to the work of Chandler among others so the two adaptations were bound to have similarities
>>
>>85966139
haha yeah just like theatre, music and literature.

just because 90% of the population is functionally illiterate doesn't mean that they've been forgotten. there will always be place for non interactive stories. your argument is that same as the dumb argument that movies should be in 60fps now, because more frames=more better. game makers like kojima have proven that technical skill and pure craftmanship can make a great game, but that doesn't mean that he always tells a great story, or that he even has great taste. giving every autistic kid in the world his own story to create and interpret on his own is just going to lead to more internet arguments without anyone actually learning anything.

with that being said, making a film has to be easier than making a game, which should happen eventually. as for directors, i think malick, anno, and von trier are all real contenders.

Shit always stays the same, it just changes superficially. We're no different now than we were 2000 years ago

I agree with OP, that PTA is best filmmaker of the 21st Century so far. Kind of have to be a faggot to see someone simply taking inspiration from something and saying he's blatantly ripping it off. Yeah he's inspired by Altman, Scorsese and Kubrick, but there's no stories in his films or sequences that you could say are 100% stolen shot for shot from their films. That's how art works. Artists are influenced by other artists as well as their own life experiences.
