The American one is the only godzilla movie to have a consistent tone and compelling characters. It's also the only one to get the angle of sympathy for the beast just trying to survive, and lament over having to kill it to actually resonate.

That said, I like all of the Japanese ones for their goofy attempts at storytelling and interesting monster designs. Their portrayal of Americans is also pretty hilarious and I very much enjoy it.

I like it for reasons pretty different to Shin Godzilla, which I enjoyed immensely. I think G14's characters were, for the most part, perfectly serviceable - I liked Cranston way more than his son, for instance, but he carried the movie well enough to move the plot along. As little as we really saw them, I liked Serizawa and his assistant, I wanted more of them. In the end, though, I am here for the giant monsters more than the people and I genuinely think they teased out the monster appearances very well. It always left me wanting more, but in a good way, if that makes sense. It made the final battle all the more enjoyable when it was all let loose. I also quite like Godzilla's big beefy snub-nosed designed, he looks mean and beastly, whereas Shin Godzilla is much more overtly monstrous. I think it was a well made, well paced movie really, I came out of the theater excited and I've enjoyed subsequent viewings.

I can agree with the criticisms of the 2014 one but I think the 1998 one was a genuinely good movie. It probably wasn't what most Godzilla fans would want but I never really expected anything similar to the old movies since they were uniquely Japanese in my mind.
I half expected them to try too hard to emulate the old ones, and I half expected them to go somewhere else entirely. I think they mostly did the latter with a small bit of the former and actually ended up making something good.

The 2014 one was the opposite. They took it in a slightly different direction than the old movies, but tried too hard to emulate something that they couldn't do justice to and therefore, failed miserably.

The problem is that there was only one character for most of the running time and I don't think too many people would seriously try to argue that he's a good one. Cranston left a void when he exited the picture and this was followed by the infamous bait & switch (Godzilla at the airport) and an abominable second act. It never recovers after this. And the final battle is full of interruptions. The "kiss of death" and "descent into hell" sequences don't compensate for over an hour of nothingness.
