They're having to further condense already truncated storylines, meaning already popular characters get screen time at the cost of exposition. This would be worse if they were still working off GRRM's material, but since that's not the case it doesn't feel like we're missing much. Nobody actually important dies anymore, at least not without pomp. It's pretty much fan service.
