Why did he lie about the suicide?
Why didn't he also kick out the guy who was actually out of tune?

He knew he was probably directly responsible for the guy's depression.

He mentions that one not knowing he was out of tune was bad enough.

But the guy who was out of tune didn't know either.

Which raises two following questions. First, why did he bother bringing it up at all, and second, if he feels some degree of responsibility for it then why did he not lighten up a bit? If he suspects that his methods literally led to someone's death and still continued on with them anyway then he goes from being just an asshole to an actual evil character.

What does he say at the end when his mouth is cropped out?

It goes to show that he really was all about that jazz. He knew he was hard, but it was about exposing the greats. And in the end, a lot of factors lead to a person's suicide, so it's not like he was the sole cause. He hadn't taught him in years.

No, he's just a bad instructor who wants to have a legacy. He takes promising musicians and forces them to push themselves to the point where they all burn out. He's hoping one of them doesn't get burnt out then credits him for their accomplishments instead of crediting themselves for being successful DESPITE him.
I actually had an instructor who had a Jazz band place second at the Lincoln Center. HE was a good Jazz instructor, and he was nothing like Simmon's character.
