It's kind of hard to make a story about a kid turning into a homoerotic superhero whose gaudy attire was an inspiration to Elvis Presley. That doesn't mean it can't have a sense of pathos. Black Adam is a tragic figure and Billy is an orphan. It's hard to tell whether DC has completely changed their tune.

Suicide Squad tried to change everything and that blew up in its face. Wonder Woman balanced things out and came out the other end a unique product that neither went too far in deconstructing its lead nor compromised the vision of the DCEU set by MoS and BvS. Justice League is trying way too hard to tell audiences that it's gonna be tons of fun and it comes off as disingenuous.
