That's because he knew his job was to keep the show on track. He never interfered with the funny, also back then the show was much more based around scripted bits and reliable guest stars instead of the riffing about anything that it became in the satellite era.

When Sex for Sam happened Opie completely changed. His ego took over and he legitimately thought he could hold his own with some of the best comedians in the world and it was painfully obvious he couldn't. It became more and more obvious every year that Opie simply couldn't hang with the boys
