Not only are taxes a legitimate function of a government, but the Starship Troopers universe is even more so because the voters and government are made up of people who have sacrificed both physically and emotionally for the body politic, which is more than "producing" civilians can claim. The Federation exists to protect and serve their sorry asses, the least they can do is contribute some of their personal wealth to the cause.

In the book they have plasma powered colony ships that travel just as fast as the human ships.

They would just need to put the bugs inside the asteroid and that would be it, right? Even if the planet has an atmosphere, a large asteroid wouldn't melt completely.
