I have an actual explanation here as an actor and all the acting agencies know this too. The reason why actresses get paid less is as they age near thirty five is because of this:

There are more young talented female actresses than males. As a result, Hollywood can go through the newest hot piece of ass with actresses, while male actors that are actually talented and masculine, like Tom Hardy, are becoming a rarity. In compensation, studios hang on to them afterwards, keeping them as a star and paying more so they can keep using them. That's why male actors near their thirties are getting paid more -- because talented male actors that are manly are practically dying out.

Now women actresses do get paid less, too. BUT...that's for the ones that are already old and forgotten. Other than that, they make bank on other things.

For the most part, actresses are expected to play their part well and be attractive, but many actresses (such as Jennifer Lawrence) gets parts for the most part due to fleeting popularity (which burns out fast, again like Jennifer Lawrence) or their looks, both of which fade quickly.

Male actors get paid more at older ages because they become better and more individually distinguished as their career progresses, making them more valuable.
See RDJ, he's paid more now than ever because he played Tony Stark so well.

There are of course exceptions on both sides. Sigourney Weaver gets so many roles in part because of her iconicism, but also because she is a great actress who can play any part well.

Liam Hemsworth is an example of exceptions for men; he's an ok actor at best, but very pretty and currently he's popular, so he gets many more roles, but each year the number of movies he's in goes down.

Another contributing factor is that we have a much larger variability in parts men play, whereas women have much less, and, for the most part, all non joke female roles require attractiveness, while men's roles don't.

Brienne of Tarth is a notable female exceptional character, Gwendoline Christie is not a pretty woman, but she's a good actress and plays a part that doesn't require attractiveness.
