Thoughts on Malick's The New World
It's the only film of his I haven't seen. What am I in for? For reference, my favorites are Knight of Cups>Tree of Life>The Thin Red Line
I'm thinking of getting the criterion release as well, but again, I don't like blind buys. How is the release?
Yoh! Pleb'n'proud here. I've only seen this, Badlands, and Days of Heaven. Thought it was pretty good. About on the level of Braveheart, way better than The Patriot.

Interesting comparison, I wouldn't doubt its better than the patriot lol. How would you rank those three? I found his first two films to be finely crafted, but lacking any emotional resonance for me. Check out The Thin Red Line next if you're interested

I think I like Days of Heaven more than Badlands. I had to think about it. They're both dear to me, though. They're the types of films that make me wonder what kind of film I could make if left to my own devices.
The New World is fun, though. Better than Altman's Popeye by a large measure.

I enjoyed Days of Heaven more as well. They're definitely intimate and sincere films, light yet layered, I understand the love and need to rewatch them myself
The final scene of the film is really one of the most beautiful endings i've seen to a film.
the last five minutes of music swelling and the sun setting slowly is really the kind of shit that Malick has perfected.
Tree of Life > Days of Heaven > The New World > To The Wonder are all i've seen

Why did the girl have to become "civilized" she completely threw away her own identity

The thin red line was great

Yep, that's why its number 3. Would you say TNW is similar in style but perhaps more playful?

Why are you comparing it to Braveheart and The Patriot?

I finished Malicks filmography a few weeks ago and this was for sure my favourite. The best balance of all the elements he is known for.
Unironically his best
