Why didn't lord moldybutt just avada kedavra harry potter at the started of the of the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

1. Firearms are difficult to obtain in the United Kingdom, doubly so for Wizards, who likely have no real legal documents backing up their existence in the first place. On top of this, underage Wizards can't do magic without getting in trouble, so they couldn't use magic to obtain said firearm
2. Voldemort is never out in the open. He generally keeps his location a guarded secret unless he is at full power, and sends the Deatheaters and other minions to do things for him so as not to risk exposure when he can't properly defend himself
3. Any situation in which the Characters find themselves facing the Dark Lord, he know they are there, and can easily prepare defenses for any attack.
4. Possibly the most important, Voldemort's soul has been divided and placed into a number of horocrux items that must be destroyed (via magic), before he can be killed. Each of these items must be located, often in an extremely dangerous and hidden location, and destroyed at great cost. Shooting Voldemort before destroying the horocrux's would merely weaken him.

Wizards are confused by any muggle technology past the 1600's, which largely has to do with the International Statute of Secrecy, in which the Wizarding world voluntarily decided to completely remove itself from muggle society. Wizards have their own towns, their own schools, their own government, everything. It would literally never occur to a Wizard to make a firearm because he can theoretically just zap shit dead or incapacitated with his wand in a nanosecond, assuming the other party didn't have a chance to block. Now, a wizards raised in muggle society would still probably understand to some degree how a firearm works, and might even see the purpose in using one, but no Wizard is going to have the machining skills, the metallurgical skills, or the chemical know-how, to just go out in their shed in and make a firearm; in the same vein that some African bush-man isn't going to just go build an AK out of the blue with no training. He may know what a firearm is, and how it works, but the bush-man lacks the pre-exsisting industry and tradition to produce such a technologically complex piece of machinery.
