Just re-watched The Thin Red Line the other day and was underwhelmed. I remembered it being a lot better.

Any suggestions for fantastic WW2 movies? Can be a real plot (Downfall) or a made up one (Inglorious Basterds), don't care really.

I really enjoyed pic related, Downfall, White Tiger; Saving Private Ryan and Hacksaw were also pretty good.

On the list next up to watch is Schindler's List, Casablanca and Das Boot. Color is preferred over B&W.
>>
Important to say that I'm not tryna be contrarian, but I hated The Thin Red Line. It meandered, and the main characters were idiots.

Which cut? I'm leaning toward director's.

Fury was pretty stellar in all aspects except for the unbelievable, cliche'd 'one against a million' ending. Everything before that was pretty excellent, especially the acting. 'Bible' was great.

Watch Dunkirk in Imax before you miss out. Seeing it in the theater was amazing.

If you liked that and want something similar, Battle of Britain and Tora Tora Tora are both epics that focus more on the historical event more so than fictionalized characters in that event. Another good one from that time period, but with more character focus, is Bridge on the River Kwai.

Come and See and Cross of Iron are two must watch ones. City of Life and Death is great also, best way to describe it is Schindlers List, but about the Rape of Nanking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HCTIUx1Arc

And my favorite understated ones, Conspiracy, which was an HBO movie from 2000 that is simply the Wannsee Confrence is really good. And Band of Brothers is a must watch as well.

The Thin Red Line isnt a war movie tho. Its a visual and oral meditation on the similarities between individuals thrown into a world they dont understand by forces beyond their control and the beauty/tragedy in that struggle, which just happens to be set in a war zone. Its my favorite movie of all time but i understand why some may find it a bit dull on repeat viewings.
>>
>>85774432
Fury is better than Saving Private Ryan.
>>
>>85776029
The scene with the girls was fucking unnecessary and ruined the pacing.
>>
>>85776482
That part was done well I agree. It wasn't filmed badly, or written badly, or anything like that. Just, overall, when I want to watch a war movie, this comes off as a pretty... I guess... "bad" war movie.

Kind of like how some novels are masterpieces of literature, and you can respect that, but you're not an English professor trying to dissect it. You just want a fucking good story to read.
>>
>>85774432
The reconstructed long version of 'The Thin Red Line' is far superior to the short version. Are you sure you saw the same version twice?
>>
>>85774936
I have three versions of 'Das Boot' and 'The Boat'. Which should I watch first? The longest and work my way down or vice-versa?
>>
>>85776622
I actually thought that was one of the best scenes. If you ever watch the film again, try and place yourself in the shoes of both the women and the soldiers.

From the boy's perspective: being so young and getting laid for the first time, then having your "love" lost in an instant and straight back into the war.

From the girl's: scared shitless these men are going to rape, rob or kill you - maybe all three - with dead Nazis outside your doorstep and here you are, a German woman trying to accommodate a bunch of fucking savage American soldiers. Of only two are acting sane and civilized; one of them just happens to be in the next room fucking your daughter.

If you don't like it, that's fine, but that's how I saw it the first time I watched it and it made a lot of sense to me why they included that scene. Maybe it just goes over some people's heads, or they feel it to be forced, I don't know.

> In the "Reconstruction" documentary, Robert Carradine says that when he, Mark Hamill, Bobby Di Cicco and Kelly Ward first met Lee Marvin, Marvin didn't say anything at first. After they got into a taxi to drive out to the shooting range where they would hone their skills, Marvin finally said, "Which one of you is Carradine?" Robert Carradine answered, "I am." Marvin's response: "Fuck you, Carradine." A short time later, after they'd been working together, Carradine asked Marvin why he said that to him. Marvin replied, "Because yours was the only name I recognized."
>>
>>85776909
Watch the longest and don't bother with the others.
>>
>>85775818
The short version of 'Das Boot' and 'The Boat' are the same visually. The English script for dubbing 'Das Boot' was written by a German, and read by English-speaking German actors. Variety of very convincing German accents if you like that sort of thing in your WWII movies. The English script for 'The Boat' was written by an American and is different from 'das Boot'. Read by American actors, in a variety of different American accents, if you like that sort of thing in your WWII movies.
>>
>>85776792
I get what your saying anon and agree that The Thin Red Line can border on being full on conceptual art at times. I just saw Dunkirk this weekend and it reminded me a lot of TTRL but more to the point and traditional in its story telling. Christopher Nolan has sited Malick as a big influence with his film making and it really shows especially when i try and think of what moments really stood out for me in Dunkirk which werent the big action set pieces but the small moments like the expression on someones face during a certain scene or the use of silence when trying to underline an important moment.

Because they saw the swastika and couldn't think of any reason why any film set in WW2 would ever, ever have a swastika on the poster unless it was pro-Nazi.

Which is funny because Sophie Scholl (and her brother and others) was executed for being part of a German resistance organization that published pamphlets criticizing the Nazi government and encouraging the German people to rise against it.

>>

It's wasn't "powerful enough through the imagery" because the fucking imagery was retarded poetry you'd never hear from even one front line infranty grunt. It's wasn't pretty, or meaningful enough to matter in the context it was delivered. It was Terrence Malick being a poncy twat knowing you people were too uneducated to catch his neediness and vanity.

Also, Hacksaw ridge was bad. I sincerely can't fathom why people love that movie so much. It was cheesy, shallow and poorly directed and botched all the scenes that should have had an emotional resonance with the viewer. My eyes rolled out of my head by the third time we saw a character running at the camera hip firing then cutting to the 5 japanese soldiers he just shot. I'm serious, even the action scenes were poorly directed, nothing new was brought to the table.

Fury on the other hand got a lot of things right, but it fell victim to some poor character development and personally I thought the climax was lame and unrealistic which clashed with the hyper realism of the action in previous scenes.

The thin red line is a bit flaky, definitely, but man it's a cinematic marvel with an amazing score to boot. The build up to the action is fantastic and even though most of the characters were thin somehow they still carried the emotional high points as though we've been with them for a while.

Das Boot is great, I'd watch the directors, it's long and I loved it.

No love for the story of Audie Murphy based on the autobiography of Audie Murphy written by Audie Murphy and starring Audie Murphy as Audie Murphy?

If you guys are going to include WW2 genocide films in here, you may as well watch what won the 2015 Best Foreign Language Film award at the Cannes Film Festival. The Hungarian Holocaust film "Son of Saul". Very brutal. I watched it in the theaters.

Here's one that gets constantly overlooked, but it's quite entertaining.

The parallels to /pol/ are hilarious.

Agreed. I enjoyed certain scenes and the conversations tremendously but as a whole movie it's fucking mediocre.

Fucking hate it. Felt like an MTV holocaust movie.

Which is a shame, because it's an interesting subject. Sort of.

This new one about Heydrich looks like it might be fun.

I don't get fury. 100 footsoldiers rush a tank. Great idea.

They've made a film of "Every Man Dies Alone/Alone in Berlin" by Hans Fallada that's coming out this year. Looks like it's going to be worth a watch. Great book too.
