>Sony Corp today reported a surge in first-quarter operating income with a 180.5% jump to 157.6B yen, or $1.43B, for the period ending June 30, 2017. Net income rose to 80.9B yen or $734M (all conversions are at today’s rates) for a 282.1% increase. The sharp hikes were largely down to a return to stability in the image sensors business after a devastating 2016 earthquake. Sony Pictures Entertainment narrowed its losses to 9.5B yen ($86.2M).

First Quarter is when most movie companies lose money, they dump the bad films that they have to release and start huge ad spends for the summer season, which only shows revenue in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. 4th Quarter is more award and holiday fare, but is also profitable due to the lower costs in promotion.

Disney could have screwed Sony over by allowing the company to run Spider-Man into the ground. With nothing else to profit from, Sony goes bankrupt and the rights to Spider-Man revert back to Marvel for free.
