No he's not, and in the sequel he wears a stupid bag on his head.
How was Friday the 13th popular enough to merit the two sequels required to gain the infamous hockey mask?
It's like if A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 was about the local pastor and not a wisecracking dream demon, or if Halloween 1 was about an evil tax collector. How did a series with such a bad start stay popular enough to eventually become good?
Have moviegoers always eaten up schlock no matter how terrible and unnoteworthy?

You go to remember that this came out in 1980, Anon. People weren't really accustomed to the slasher genre yet so it was new and exciting. Besides Black Christmas, what else is there to compare this to? That being said, it is a pretty weak movie now compared to the others. Part 3 is top tier.

I like part 3 a lot too but it would have been hugely improved if Shelley and Vera had been the main characters.
