ITT: films you have to be smart to appreciate

This and Inception are the most fake "I'm so smart" movies.

Don't forget Donnie darko

This, I enjoy both of those movies and they're on my yearly rewatch list, but they're absolutely not "smart" movies.

The longer I look at the photoshopped arm the worse it gets.

Inception was a solid 8/10 Hollywood movie and it was better than most blockbusters. The problem is that idiotic fans blew everything out of proportion
>oh my god inception is the smartest and most complex movie ever, you have to watch it twice to figure it out(even though everything was explained through exposition by the characters)
>>
>>85750427
Yeah, its one of those movies that i generally don't advertise my like of, as to not be associated with the mongs who hype it up so much

I hate Norton's face in that poster.

>films you have to be smart to appreciate
I don't think Fight Club is a movie you have to be smart to appreciate (and I've met a few fans of it that are strong arguments to the contrary), but I do think it's an example of a movie with a few layers on the onion. Repeat viewings and discussion tends to yield a lot more than just watching it once. No Country For Old Men is similar - there's crowdpleasing elements, but also a lot of deeper layers if you're willing to dig in.

I see "have to be smart to appreciate" as more of a barrier-to-entry thing. Comes up quite a bit in scifi. You see movies like 2001 or Interstellar where you really can't even get into them unless you've already spent a great deal of time reading about the relevant subjects.

>>85750273
Obviously you're not smart enough to get it.
>>

to be honest, the only movie you really have to watch twice to appriciate entirely is memento, and its made to be that way.

Anyone who uses the words "deep" or "smart" to describe movies is a certified pleb

You're either a genius, or you haven't seen that many movies.

You can get a certificate for that!? Just tell me where to send my money. I want to get it on a t-shirt.

what movies have i missed?

What, you mean that people of normal intelligence typically need multiple viewings to really appreciate, besides Memento? Here's 10 off the top of my head, but that's really just a starter kit, there are probably hundreds.
Raging Bull
2001: A Space Odyssey
Being There
Vertigo
Blue Velvet
The Conversation
Chinatown
Touch of Evil
Aguirre
Barry Lyndon

I don't necessarily mean you won't understand what happened on the first viewing, but it's unlikely that you really "get" it. You need one viewing to absorb what the movie is about, and at least one more pass to parse the thematic and symbolic elements and try to wrap your head around what the movie is actually about.

sorry, that last bit was poorly written, hopefully you understand what I mean.
