Most of the good officers usually resign their commission after they meet their minimum service obligation, and that usually happens when they're a captain. That leaves a higher percentage of shitbags in the officer ranks at the field grade and above, which are the dumb fucks that make policy.

I was intel. I got out of college with a butter bar. But I transfered in at a junior level after going to a community college. I couldn't take mil 100 or 101. But I did my interview, left a good impression and so they processed me and went on about their day. But I needed to catch up. So I had to go to basic camp for 30 days in Kentucky. I did my absolute best. I left a good impression there too.

After passing that, I had the added pressure of having to catch up with my underclassmen and fellow juniors who were looking to commission. I was behind the ball, and trying to prove myself simultaneously. It was hard, but I did it.

This was on top of my pursuit of a bfa in digital media and bs in computer science as well as a minor in history.

But I did it. And I commissioned active duty into humint.

Boy did I not know what I was expecting. I got shit on from above and below. I hated my life. Despite the fact that I struggled through my 20s just getting enough dough together to get my life on track and find purpose and motivation and got a good education, I had to deal with the perception from my NCO's that I was nothing more than a boot, which I suppose was true. But I also had to deal with shit from above, who gave me impossible directives. For example, interviewing shitheads but not actually getting serious with them, because of hearts and minds.

Overall, its not that we're incompetent. We just don't give a shit after a while.

So I spent a cumulative 5 years and 122 days in the ME between 2001 and 2011, infantry in the 2001 invasion of afghanistan and intelligence/psyops from 03 onwards. Because of the nature of what I was doing post 03, I was moving between areas and often coming out to meet with locals and trying to win over people of importance within the local communities, so I was often traveling with a small team to various far flung areas. Usually we'd travel to a nearby FOB or similar and tag along with a patrol. Through this I saw all officers of all quality in various situations.

In my experience, many officers were pretty bad, especially in the early phases of both Afghanistan and Iraq. One thing about Generation Kill that I really agree with is the statement on how hard it is sending men into battle. I made a lot of choices, killed a lot of people (3 personally, many, many more via orders I gave) but the one thing that I really had trouble with was leading men in combat in the afghan invasion. I wasn't scared for myself and certainly had no qualms about the enemy, and I had accepted that putting my men in danger was apart of what we were there for. But the idea of making a mistake and getting them injured or killed honestly made me feel sick a few times, and I've seen plenty get trapped second guessing themselves and panic. Its easier once things kick off, but before the situation its definitely a difficult issue to deal with. 03 was a clustfuck. Lot of morons, especially in the US forces that joined up after 9/11 and were still pretty green.

06-09 were the shit.

The Allied strategy was fairly sound in the end, at least on a grand strategy scale. The Brits just put their navy on Germany's throat and after that it was just a matter of slowly tightening the grip, closing down german food and resource supplies until the whole axis was on the brink of starvation. Look up the conditions that the Germans and Austro-Hungarians were living in towards the end as the food ran out. Everything else was a matter of draining more German resources and attempts to hurry the process. WWI was fairly bad from the American perspective though. The Brits played WWI the best on a strategic level. Turning the Anglophobic US into a ally with a superb propaganda campaign, taking the hard but correct naval strategy and going for a slow, methodical victory. Germans did fine on the ground but had frankly shit strategy that just created more enemies.

Though ultimately the Americans won the peace. Brits should have stayed out of WWI, it cost them more than it gained.

Also the best American acts of strategy have not been their military ones, but their grand strategy. Breaking up the British/Jap alliance, economic and trade are the best weapons in the US arsenal, not the military. The American Empire is near total and because its basically a voluntary club its not going to be easily dismantled.

Ah yeah. Sorry, I misunderstood, and you're right, but I think its important to remember that the US command really didn't work well or try to learn from the allies, and kept pretty independent. This wasn't the well integrated alliance that the British and French and other allied forces had developed that was sharing ideas and experiences, or the effective melding of the Allies in WWII. It was in practicality the Allies and the americans. The Brits especially warned the US commanders but you also have to consider that until the US entry, the enemy that the US had expected to fight was the British. US commanders had spent most of their careers developing and preparing to fight the British and so did not take well to receiving advice from them. So they went in with the training they had, which was pre war, and their men paid for it.

I read a few of the records from the time a short while ago. There is a really sad report from a British General who begged his US counterpart to adjust his plan of attack, right up until it started. He described watching the men go forward and watching the result from a observation post, how it reminded him of past battles and how bitter he was that the same mistakes were being repeated.

As a physician in the military, you start out as an O-3 automatically, they pay for your license fees and malpractice insurance and you could skip your residency and do them as OTJ training right away while in, getting paid a fuck ton more than you would in a regular residency. They will even pay for your medical school if you commission for long enough.

Honestly you're retarded for not starting in the military as a physician. Your patients are all relatively healthy 18-50 year olds, you can travel the world, you get treated much better than most other officers and if/when you get out, you will make even more than any out of school, no experience fag.
