They're both in the top 5 highest grossing films of the year

It's a reference to the fact that these two actors have appeared in motion pictured directed by Peter Jackson, who got his start as a video game arcade magnate, aka the Tolkien King of New Zealand.

they will realize, as they did with ghostbusters, that you can't appeal to only one demographic.

mcu fans may not turn out in droves to watch this, since it has no other mcu characters and is largely unconnected to the mcu.

It's literally impossible for these big IP movies to fail now with worldwide releases and merchandising.
Even Ghost in the Shell, a supposed flop turned in a 60 mil profit after worldwide ticket sales.
>>
>>85723696
GITS actually did flop so badly that they canceled soundtrack release(even as digitally only) because they would have lost money

just so you know for the future: just because it made a tiny bit more than its budget doesn't mean its made a profit
>>
>>85722752
Both actors were in the Middle-earth movies. Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins, Andy Serkis is Gollum

Dr Strange and Ant Man didn't have other MCU characters in their origin movies.

theater cut, an even bigger cut for theaters outside of domestic, dvd/bluray printing, and the biggest hole: marketing costs
>>
>>85723141
It's DCshills trying to paint the narrative that if a MCU film doesn't make a billion it's a flop. It's more so a testament to the success of how well their movies have been doing. Homecoming's budget was 175m and it made more then that on opening weekend worldwide.

>>
>>85724634
>It's DCshills trying to paint the narrative that if a MCU film doesn't make a billion it's a flop. It's more so a testament to the
If Marvel owned Spider-Man and it made $800 mil, that would be fine. But SONY owns Spider-Man and they sold the merchandising rights and will lend out Spider-Man to Marvel for 5 MOVIES and Homecoming will only end up making a little more than ASM 2. That's the story here.
>>
>>85724335
Basically theaters take about half of the cut. So studio gets 40-60% not 100%. Budget does not include advertizing. Advertizing is at least $50m for a movie like Gits. Realistically its $100m
>>
>>85724610
I would assume that marketing is already calculated in. Hell with those "block buster" movies, it's probably even 2/3 of the budget and I'm not even trying to exaggerate here.

I don't know about theater cuts, but I think it would be kinda odd, to not exclude this from the "gross" number. In that case the more correct word would presumably be "revenue".
>>
>>85724781

It hasn't passed ASM 2's box office numbers yet, and the budget for ASM 2 was only $25 million more than Homecoming.

And again, Sony didn't take it up the ass from Marvel to make a little bit more than ASM 2. They could have made an $800 mil Spider-Man without Marvel.

Yes it does, TASM made 40 million dollars in each one, TASM2 made 100 million in China and 30 in Japan, that IS insane

People joke about Homecoming needing China to be "saved", but it's the other way around, TASM2 was saved by because HC has been more profitable in every other region and will easily surpass both it's predecessors once it releases in those countries

>>85725189
See above, HC is already more profitable than the TASM series, you downplayed the budget difference, but even ignoring that it already beat both movies domestically and most likely in Europe and other regions

Again, Sony could have made a Spider-Man movie without Marvel and made the same $. After ASM 2 practically anything would have been an improvement. They didn't get assfucked by Marvel with the sole goal of "making a movie that's a little more profitable than ASM 2".

They have to lend out Spider-Man for 5 movies FOR FREE(or practically nothing). They could have told Marvel to go fuck themselves, made a new Spider-Man movie (that would have made the same as Homecoming) and forced Marvel to pay huuuuuge $ to use Spider-Man in Civil War and Infinity War.

Marvel is laughing, and Sony is crying because it's barely gonna make any more than ASM 2.

Sony's getting MORE money for getting someone else to come up with these movies without wasting budgets so ridiculously high for a solo that you need to hide them not to become (more than they already are that is) the laughing stock of the industry

That's right, go check Mojo, TASM2's budget was never officially announced, it's been rumoured to be from $255million to 295, more than any Avengers movie. You can pretend it doesn't matter, "hurr it's just 25million difference from TASM", but that's still 25million more dollars in their damn pockets

So not only they can finally breath and have smoother productions that aren't plagued by rewrites and reshoots (reminder that MJ's character completely disappeared from TASM2 because their movie kept changing), not only they can now work with actors that won't bail on them because they're THAT incompetent, they even get to shill their retarded spin-off projects as part of the MCU (Gargan's actor from HC will appear in their Silver Sable/Black Cat movie)

None of the people involved have anything to cry about. Marvel and Sony get to laugh their way to the bank and the fans have the relief of not having to suffer shit like pic related again
>>
>>85726795
>Sony's getting MORE money for getting someone else to come up with these movies without wasting budgets so ridiculously high for a solo that you need to hide them not to become (more than they already are that is) the laughing stock of the industry
Are you retarded? Movies cost big money to PRODUCE, but not a whole lot to write/pre-produce.

You're lack of optics on this issue is insane. Let me lay it out for you.
Marvel Executive: "What did we get?"
>we got to keep the Spider-Man merchandising rights (why those retards at Sony didn't ask for it back I'll never know)
>we get to develop THEIR new Spider-Man movie to our liking
>we get the opportunity to INTRODUCE the new Spider-Man in OUR Civil War movie
>we don't have to put a dime into producing the movie
>and we get to use the Spider-Man character in 5 movies of our choosing for practically peanuts
Marvel Executive: "Holy fucking shit, but what did Sony get"?
>they get a movie that will make a little bit more than Amazing Spider-Man 2 (the worst reviewed and least successful movie in the entire franchise)
Marvel Executive: "BWHAHAAAHHAH!"
>>
>>85727021
Why do you even care about what happens to Sony?
>>
>>85722628
GotG didn't flop. It maybe didn't make quite as much as Disney wanted given what seemed like a big advertising campaign, but it very likely made a sizable profit.

Homecoming isn't flopping, it's doing fine and hasn't opened in China yet. It has to deal with decreased 3d ticket sales and a less favorable exchange rate compared to when the Avengers and Ultron came out. This actually will probably be a significant factor in the difference in the box office between Justice League and Infinity War. Infinity War is supposedly filmed with some sort of Imax digital cameras that Justice League isn't using. So Infinty War will likely get a greater percentage of their viewings from Imax, which costs more per ticket, than Justice League
>>
>>85727185
I don't. But everyone here keeps talking about how this movie is so fucking successful for Sony when the writing is on the wall. They got fucked. HARD.

Imagine if they made Homecoming without Marvel (which wouldn't be too hard, the script wasn't ground breaking or anything and Robert Downey Jr. was barely in it) and it became a hit. THEN Sony went to Marvel and said "oh, you want Spider-Man for Infinity War, well it'll cost you the merchandising rights and $30 million".
>>

Marvel isn't MAKING the movies. Sony is still PAYING for the $175 million production costs.

>all they have to do is let Marvel use Spider-Man in the MCU
Marvel tried to buy the film rights for Spider-Man for $2 billion, but somehow they worked it out they get to use him FOR FREE. Are you insane? Sony got fucked big time.

>which costs them absolutely nothing.
It costs Marvel absolutely nothing, and that's the problem for Sony. They could have made Homecoming on their own without Marvel (and it would have made the same money) and they then could have charged Marvel and arm and a leg to use Spider-Man in Civil War, Infinity War, etc.
>>
>>85728356
>It costs Marvel absolutely nothing
This is great. Fuck Sony
>>
>>85724832
>Basically theaters take about half of the cut.

Theater take varies over time. Theaters take very little during the first weekend (which is why a lot of stinker movies try to market hard and make their money back before bad word of mouth can spoil everything). Every week though they keep a larger cut of the ticket sales. For a movie like Wonder Woman that's still playing two months later theaters are taking almost all the money for every ticket sold so at this point the only thing WB's getting out of it is bragging rights. Obviously theaters are happiest when they get movies that they can keep running for a long time rather than ones that fizzle out.

No they couldn't, and no it wouldn't. This is the fourth incarnation of Spider-Man in seven years, the fact that it's in the MCU with RDJ as a supporting character is the only reason it's making decent money at all.

I'm sorry, but did Homecoming already got out of theathers? Oh, that's right. The screenings aren't even over yet. In fact, it's only half of it. Does not having more money than SM3 at half its theather exposure count as a flop? Is that what you're saying? Because if you're saying that I can assure you that you're wrong. Why would you make this topic when Homecoming's run is still on? Homecoming is still being played right now and it has been the best movie in the MCU for how many years now? It's playing at the same time as one of the worst movies in the DCEU who just happen to have a lead because they're feeding off the energy of feminism. But you know what? Itstill fucking sucks. Homecoming is one of the best fucking movies in the MCEU , they went 120 milliom at the opening and would of beaten recordsl if Mary Jane wasn't a feminist. Maybe you should shut the fuck up before you make retarded topics like this. You know why? Because you're going to be embarrassed when Homecoming beats Raimi movies and someone bumps this topic. Oh look at that, Wonder woman got only 3 million at the weekend when it needed 10 to pass Civil War. Are you a fucking drunk? Are you retarded? Are you autistic? You are a fucking idiot and you should never make a topic on this board again and I'm fucking serious. I almost have a feeling you're the only guy making all these anti-Homecoming topics because you're a faggot hater who doesn't like the movie because it is good. Fuck you, be good at something in YOUR life and then maybe try to troll these fucking movies on the board, like I give a fuck. It's so easy to spot out your threads now, you're a retard. Always doing stupid shit like this. Why don't you try to be a good poster? Just for once? For once in your fucking life try not to make a topic like this. That's even fucking worse. SONY is PAYING. But MARVEL is calling the shots. This has literally never happened before in the history of media.

>They can only use him in their team-up movies, they get absolutely nothing from the actual Spider-Man movies.
If Sony didn't make this shit deal, they could have charged Marvel MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS for everytime they wanted to use him. Now they get him for free.

>Clearly not.
You're a retard. Marvel at one point offered to buy Spider-Man for $2 billion, but now they get to use him for free. How does that help Sony?

>No they couldn't, and no it wouldn't. This is the fourth incarnation of Spider-Man in seven years, the fact that it's in the MCU with RDJ as a supporting character is the only reason it's making decent money at all.
BS. Amazing Spider-Man 2 was one of the worst capeshits ever and it still made $700 million world wide. Any new Spider-Man movie would have been a step up. You're so delusional if you think inserting it into the MCU and having RDJ changed the profits that much.

>If they'd have done that then Marvel would have just done those movies without Spider-Man, and Sony would get nothing.
Sony is still getting nothing. And if Marvel was offering $2 billion to buy the Spider-Man film rights, surely they wouldn't have been against renting him out for a few choice roles.

I hope you never run a business with a partner.
