What was the purpose of this character?
>>85691970
To show how a shellshocked soldier behaves. To show the desparity of the situation. To give more contrasting conflict and tension to the sea narrative. To show him dissapearing in the mass of all the other soldiers at the end. To show the juxtaposition of a senseless and pointless death of George with the senseless and pointless deaths of the soldiers on the other side. To show what stoicism is with the Rylance's son saying to him that the boy is alright.

What this anon already said >>85692062 to juxtapose his senseless and pointless death with the equaly senseless an pointless deaths on the other side. a moral lesson in stoicism for Rylance's son and to show that not all "heroes" in war are the usual true heroes we all imagine them to be.

This 100%. Also his little speech about getting into the local newspaper was the most eye-rolling thing on the planet.

Without George there is no conflict on that sea boat and without George Cillian Murphy's character is also kind of pointless and without George there would be no georgeposting.
Based George
You're all so dim.
One of the key moments in the film was the point where the son of the captain told the shell-shocked soldier that the boy would be fine, even though the boy was dead.
All of the pain, anguish, dread and despair of the war was shown in the shell-shocked soldier.
All of the sympathy, strength and kindness that came as a result of it was shown in the captains son.
If you didn't see the purpose of these characters, you didn't understand the film.
