I will never understand why R&M has the reputation as being "smart" by it's fans and "pretentious/edgy" by it's haters. It doesn't really use any clever or new concepts ever and it doesn't integrate science in a smart fashion at all, it's 100% science-fantasy like Star Wars. The whole pretentious "BUUURP GODS NOT REAL MORTY" meme isn't true either, Rick says things like that but is supposed to come off like a pretentious hypocrite (when he comes closest ever to death he saves Morty instead of himself and then furiously prays to God to save him, and then renounces God after he miraculously survives, Rick not even contemplating how he can believe 100% that God isn't real after he meets Lucifer). I think Rick and Morty is good, not the best cartoon ever but still good and among the better on TV right now. I really don't think it ever pretends to be more than it is but it's built up a weird reputation.

Do people legitimately watch cartoons to feel intelligent?

As far as cartoon shows go, I'd rate Rick & Morty as decent-to-good. There's significant character development and plot lines compared to, say, Family Guy, and pretty much every episode has a memorable moment or two. I'd rate Season 1 a bit better than Season 2, but I'm hoping Season 3 is the best so far because it looks like the production quality got much better. Just hope Justin and Dan don't start running out of ideas and return to using nonsensical violent gags as a crutch like they did in S2 at times.

I watched the original run of Futurama recently and thought it was good and also had smart moments.
Will I feel the same if I watch Rick and Morty?

I like both but in my opinion Futurama felt more earnest and the emotional moments felt way more genuine than in Rick and Morty, Rick and Morty is much more cynical. R&M does some interesting/clever things in terms of writing and structure at times that Futurama never really did, give it a shot the anti-fanbase and the fanbase both don't accurately represent the show.

I like it because it does character drama in an entertaining way, and seems to parody the cynicism that shows like house and breaking bad trade on

The asshole genius trope extrapolated to a completely nonsensical extreme, and dropped inside an otherwise low stairs family drama to highlight its absurdity

Roiland's delivery is fucking well executed, and the show sets up satisfying jokes with creative premises every single episode.

It's fun to watch, and the fact that Morty constantly sees through all the bullshit and consistently tries to tell the other characters and the audience how obviously wrong Rick is about everything only to be completely ignored (by both other characters and the audience) just highlights how great it is on selling you on its world
