Lord of the Rings thread
Fellowship > RotK > Two Towers
Two Towers > RotK > Fellowship
The reason why (most) normies see LotR as a nerd thing is because when they try to watch the first movie they get bored because it has a 1hr+ build-up with almost no action or a single tense moment
Watched two towers yesterday and my gosh is gollum starting to show his age
>>85636264
Fuck you
>>85636372
The first hour is great though
>>85636535
>The first hour is great though
Yes, I know it's great. I really like the trilogy as a whole. All I'm saying is that in order to enjoy these movies you really have to be willing to watch them. It's not a "casual" trilogy
>>85636500
>Fuck you
Defend your ranking, OP
>Trying to rate the individual movies
They all bring something different and are all amazing for different reasons.

Two Towers has alot of arwen/aragorn shit, just alot of slow moments that feel like padding (which makes sense since they had to stretch it out and rearrange stuff) and the general atmosphere of rohan doesn't do it for me as much as the other 2
I prefer the atmosphere of rotk, the battle of Pelenor fields I enjoyed more than helms deep and I loved, well, everything in rotk
Same with fellowship but to a much larger extent, it's a 10/10 film for me
>>85636928
>Two Towers best
Explain this
>>85636816
>a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt for so small a thing? Such a little thing...
>aragorn ready to strike down boromir
Damn, i keep forgetting these small but glorious golden nuggets in this trilogy
>>85637013
>everything rohan related from wormtongue to eowyn
>helms deep
>theoden
>sams speech
>faramir
>the full horror/consequence of war
>theoden monologue
>march of the ents
>>85636860
Rohan is pretty comfy to me, but then I enjoy Ango-Saxon/Nordic shit.
>>85636215
RotK > Fellowship > Two Towers
>>85637161
I can accept towers > fellowship but rotk over fellowship? No way
>>85636928
'no'
>>85636860
Valid point. I love rohan and helms deep but I see what you're trying to say
>>85637189
2/3 hobbit films were good...
>>85636860
They're all 10/10 films desu; each one has something different to offer all the while staying cohesive to the overall story.
The ONLY issue i have with rotk is the over reliance on cgi
>>85637258
Delete this
>>85637258
But only the 1st one was good anon
The 2nd one had good moments sure but most of it was bad and the 3rd was embarrassing outside of Bilbo and dorf scenes
>>85637258
As just movies, yes, they're just comfy. As Tolkien's universe movies they have notorious issues. Building up Smaug for two movies just to get rid of it in 10 minutes like it was some weak ass dragon is one of my main issues with them
>>85637354
I'd argue the 2nd had more good than bad scenes anon...
>>85637317
"No"
>>85636816
>tfw you will never answer Gondors call for aid and follow your king into battle
Every time.
Boromir is my favourite character
I always get sad with his death
That being said there isn't many characters I dislike
Will there ever be a reboot? It's one of my biggest fears in life.
The Appendices > The Two Towers > The Fellowship of the Ring > The Desolation of Smaug > The Return of the King > The Battle of the Five Armies > An Unexpected Journey
>>85637433
There will almost certainly be a reboot, the jews are just waiting for the right time
>>85636215
Fellowship > Two Towers > RotK
I enjoyed RotK overall but thearmy of the deadleaves a bad taste in my mouth every single time I rewatch it.
>>85637435
classic
>>85637433
I wish pipe smokers were not autistic in wanting to smoke tobaccos named after Tolkien stuff.
>>85637397
The hobbit trilogy is the lotr equivalent of the star wars prequel trilogy, over use of crappy cgi, good story idea but very poor execution
>>85637537
>For you
>>85637508
This. Final battle feels too cheap and not earner at all
>>85637601
The parts that were lifted from the book were executed perfectly imo and are on par with the lotr stuff, id challenge anyone to prove me wrong
The non canon parts were absolutely unbearable, so I'll give you that
>>85637435
>desolation of smaug better than rotk
>five armies better than unexpected journey
classic paul dano
>>85637123
Ok good for you but fellowship has
>Shire comfyness
>Lothlórien
>moria
>the Balrog
>the Argonath
Just like lots of cool locations and world building. The fight attached the end is good too.
LET THE LARD OF THE BLACK LAND COME FORTH
>>85637602
>the way Merry and Pippin are the first to go charging after Aragorn
Gets me every time
>>85637679
>but fellowship has
>literally everything in the movie
Ftfy
>>85637537
>>85637602
>For Rickon
>>85637773
>>85637679
It doesn't have the epic moments that towers has (save the balrog scene) or the peripheral gloom that seems to hang over rohan, the atmosphere during the rohan/helms deep scenes were exceptional and you actually got the feeling that yes, the world could end where in the fellowship it all just seemed like an adventure
>>85637873
For a middle movie in a trilogy it was extremely well made.
>>85637873
Not him but this is why the films, much like the books, have to be judged as a whole.
Fellowship has the Hobbits crying after Gandalf's death, anyway. Probably one of the best crying scenes in cinema. Gray Havens ain't got shit on it.
>>85637903
Aye, it really was
>>85637957
Agree that it should be seen as a whole but I'd argue that the emotional payload in two towers is greater than any of the others
>>85636215
books >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FOTR > TT, ROTK
Why did everyone suck isildurs dick so much
Seemed like a jerk and died like a bitch
>>85638714
>Why did everyone suck isildurs dick so much
like who
>>85636215
This is correct
>>85638714
Go to bed, Elrond.
>>85639839
Kek was back on my menu for a second sir
>>85636215
TT is probably the strongest overall, great pacing, great sequences, great structure, great goddamn everything. Fellowship drops the ball the moment they leave the Moria and the movie ends with a 45 minutes long fart. Return spends its whole first half being nothing but build up, the second is the peak of the series.
>>85637435
BtFA is absolute Tolkson bottom of the barrel.
>>85637430
>Boromir is the only member of the fellowship to die for good
>>85638714
Try saying his name.
>>85637433
tolkien estate are never going to sell
Fellowship
>Backstory w/ Sauron
>Shire comfyness
>Best Gandalf
>Travelan to bREE
>Arwen kino chase scene
>Elf city
And that's just half of it, I like Rotk and TT but overal those movies are 50% film/story and 50% battle footage.
>>85640320
What's wrong with post Moria?
>>85641442
pls
I agree with OP. Overall Two Towers dragged in certain scenes that RotK didn't, despite RotK having some of the cheesier moments in the trilogy. I think RotK's higher highs ultimately come out on top of its lower lows, and just barely give it an edge over TT. Fellowship on the other hand I think is almost in a league of its own, with hardly any real low points to speak of.
That being said, I think they're all 10/10 movies, it's just a matter of preference. They honestly do feel like a singular work and it's hard for me to really judge them on an individual level.
SARUMAN
>>85636372
i wish there was a series or show adapted to this..
just the viewpoint of a tavern keeper or baker or whatever, going about his mundane, daily life, and people interacting with him, telling him whats going on in the outside world
I don't get why people rate TTT so low. I think 1-2-3 works amazing and there's no quality drop in any of these movies.
after ROTK came out no film fulfilled me the way the trilogy did...went out to read all the shit available to fill the void...then The Hobbit came out and fucked everything up.
>>85645256
It's not bad, but it's just that it's not as good as the other two.
The high points arent as high and it drags a little during certain points.
>ywn charge into the orc army's flank at a gallop, screaming "DEATH!" and following Theoden King in a desperate bid to break the armies of Mordor
>ywn wheel about and reform the line to face down the charging mumakil, head-on and with no hesitation
Why even exist?
>>85646406
God, that one shot of the really really angry viking and the subsequent shot of some ork just shitting himself in fear is so legendary
>>85637903
what an odd metric
>>85640401
it's IZZLE-dr in the animated movies
BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY
>>85641279
that arwen scene is a testimony to how PJ fucked up frodo character
>>85646636
Isn't that Gamling?
>>85647011
It could be, I guess.
>>85646944
Yeah he did kind of pile on the vulnerability a little too much. He doesn't really do anything
>>85636816
This. Trying to rank the lotr movies is a true sign of plebdom and proof that you don't really "get" the movies.
How about Fellowship = TT = RotK.
All 3 are 10/10
>>85637123
Two Towers is a total snoozefest up until Helms deep
Fellowship is the best for all the comfy lore building and early adventure excitement. Every fantasy story is most enjoyable at the beginning when it's still innocent imo before you get to an army of trees storming a battlefield and flooding a citywide area. That kinda stuff is awesome but you lose some of the magic of that small scale stuff like Bilbos birthday and just trying to get to the Prancing Pony.
It's the same reason I find Harry Potter 1-3 so rewatchable but latter movies have nothing that draws me back in.
>>85637433
Yep once Chris Tolkien dies there's gonna be a Disney reboot where Frodo is black and Aragon is a woman
>>85647368
>It's the same reason I find Harry Potter 1-3 so rewatchable but latter movies have nothing that draws me back in.
the potter movies do actually get shitter as they go though, it's not really the same.
>RotK>TT>Fellowship.
Fuck fellowship and it's rpg feel. If I wanted that I'd watch another film. TT went too far the other direction with half the film on one battle.
>>85647400
no there isn't, no matter how many times you meme it.
>>85647527
Cavat, fuck the ghosts and the Le spooky face surge instead of the men from southern gondor.
>>85647492
True but even bookwise the first four or so feel so much more fun and not as bogged down by its own story. It still felt like wizard boy does wizard things. I still can't believe we left Hogwarts for the end of the series. It's the best part OF the series.
>>85647528
Yes, and it will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Infinity War 2 will take place in middle Earth
>>85636215
RotK is fucking shit.
>>85647770
Potter got American TV showed. That happens in literally every serious show.
>Le super powered bad guy who never gets caught does what he wants for an entire season
Or
>Super sekret klub is really behind everything and they frame and/or depower the good guys.

Rest easy friends, LOTR will never be remade.
At its very core LOTR is a wholesome traditionalist story about defending one's homeland and culture and resisting invasion.
Trying to create a 'progessive' LOTR is impossible- you would have to corrupt and strip so much away that there would be nothing left.
Trying to produce a massive trilogy made with the same enthusiasm and dedication will also never happen with a rag-tag team of diversity hires. Even then, commentators will pine that the reboot is simply 'LOTR in black-face'.
Instead LOTR will be denounced as the backward story of the white man, that 'simply hasn't aged so well'.
The 20th anniversary of LOTR is just a few short years away. They will probably release a special anniversary edition of the trilogy. You can expect to see it dragged through the dirt by the media.

The build up to Helm's Deep is purest Kino.

You underestimate the nose
THE HORN OF GONDOR
These films are the PERFECT blend of practical effects and CGI. They hit the absolute sweet spot, and I can't think of anything in the past 15 years that hits it on the mark like these films do
Also,
>Fellowship - Most comfy
>Two Towers - Most enjoyable
>RoTK - Most memorable
>>85651353
Krampus.
I loved the practical effects so much I bought the art book. Trick R Treat for that matter too.
Lighting of the beacons was absolute fucking kino
If you disagree you need to be shot
>>85651698
the beacons were lit af famm.
Soundtrack was godly
So when frodo and Bilbo go on the boat to the undying lands do they live forever? Or is that just the elves?
>>85651838
no they don't get to live forever, just live the rest of their lives amongst prime elf poosey and be properly healed of the damage the ring has done to them.
>>85651353
They used laser-scanned hand-made models for the creatures, which is why the CGI still looks so good today.
Even the most outrageous CGI in these movies are really just digitally manipulated practical effects.
How in the fuck is there extended editions of the hobbit movies
>>85651353
>All the orcs are real people with grotesque and horrifying costumes
