Why couldn't he have kept the main action live action and simply CGI'd in some background planes and destroyers? Has anyone been so backwardly afraid of CGI that they actively damaged their vision? It would be like the battle of Helms Deep with only 100 extras

Because it's an actual real life event and it happened exactly like that. The airforce was sparse and hated by the soldiers on that beach because he lack of them there, like shown in the film.
Yes, there were not many destroyers and boats and that's why the transportation was a big problem. Why would they need the civil boats if they had 100 destroyers?

39 destroyers were deployed for Dunkirk. 8 were held back for future use after excessive bombing. Hundreds of planes were deployed - most were further inland admittedly but there were certainly more than 3 spitfires over the beach. The germans used more than 4 planes to bomb Dunkirk beach.

Get the fuck out of here you fucking retard.
>>
>>85623213
you're the fucking retard here mate
there were hundreds of planes deployed over the course of the entire evacuation - 8 fucking days. and as you said, most of them were inland I think that looking at a single section of the beach itself, over a single day, you would probably only see 4 bombers and 3 fighters

you think the film showed the entire evacuation and everything that was going on, or tried to? it wasnt like an action movie
>>
>>85623213
But german didn't use 12 Stukas at once, it's not like every bombing in the film is every bombing that happened in that week of the land narrative. And it's not like the brits sent 50 Spitfires at once to the beach, the film follows 3 of them for an hour, like it happened for real.
You are implying like Dunkirk was a big one day battle of 50 Stukas vs 50 Spitfires while 40 Destroyers are having trouble of transporting all the people so they need 900 more boats to get them safe.
>>
>>85623334
>I'm wrong but I'll pretend I'm not - honestly the luftwaffe only sent 4 planes to bomb Dunkirk and one spitfire without fuel shot one of them down!

please stop being so fucking stupid on the internet, the film was good - the fact he used real planes was admirable. Using some small cgi to add some scale would not have been a bad thing. Fight your autism and accept this.

>>
>>85623892
The Battle of Dunkirk was held from May 26th to June 4th. The film shows bits from one week. 6 british destroyers were sunk in total, about of them shown in the film in that week. Obviously the film doesn't show every single second of that entire week but it's safe to say that there was not one day where there were tens of destroyers there at once because you would be pretty stupid to put so many destroyers in one place with U boats floating around. And to pretend like with those destroyers there were hundreds of planes fighting in the air is just retarded.

What? So Nolan just said fuck it and made it into a whole week eh?
Fuck off.
>>
>>85624189
So, in spite of his film’s $150m budget, the Royal Air Force seems to consist of three Spitfires, although real-life pilots flew 3,500 sorties at Dunkirk. The Luftwaffe, which Hitler made solely responsible for wiping out the beached Brits, seems able to summon up little more than a couple of Messerschmitts, three Stukas and one bomber. The Royal Navy appears to comprise just two destroyers; in fact, it deployed 39 destroyers and 309 other craft.
>>
>>85624224
This is why I haven't seen it. I can never understand brits.
>>
>>85624243
It deployed 39 destroyers and 309 craft THROUGHOUT the whole ordeal. Not all at once.
>>
>>85624225
I was taking the piss out of you for getting assblasted about the fact that only 2 destroyers and 3 spitfires were shown over the course of the film, which takes place over a week, whilst your defence was "b-but the film only shows s-scenes from one day a-at a time a-and there wouldnt be more than 2 destryoers on the beach at once"

you're wrong and you got BTFO. Stay eternally anally ravaged.
>>
>>85620095
Go to fucking war some time
>>
>>85624243
>the Royal Air Force seems to consist of three Spitfires, although real-life pilots flew 3,500 sorties at Dunkirk.
But Dunkirk follows just one hour of the air narrative and it's safe to say that about 3 of them were flying then, not all 3500.

>The Luftwaffe, which Hitler made solely responsible for wiping out the beached Brits, seems able to summon up little more than a couple of Messerschmitts, three Stukas and one bomber.
Again, it's not like Nolan portrays every single second of thaf week in the land narrative in a hour and a half long film. And why are the casualties so relatively low and why did more than 300 000 soldiers safely evacuate home, why do you think some historians even think that Hitler just let them go back home?

>The Royal Navy appears to comprise just two destroyers; in fact, it deployed 39 destroyers and 309 other craft.
I don't know where you get your info, there were only 6 british destroyers used at Dunkirk directly, and even if there were 39 Destroyers used, they certainly weren't used all at once in a single fucking day.
>>
>>85624369
>39 destoryers and 309 craft over 8 days
>the film which takes place over the entire 8 days shows 2 destoryers and 3 spitfires

Jesus Christ man, the film was good - adding in some background ships and planes with CGI would have been no bad thing. Why are you all getting so autistic about this?
>>
>>85624392
hehe le trolled xDDD
>>
>>85624442
If you payed any attention you would have known that the air narrative takes place in one hour, the sea narrative in one day and the land narrative in one week. So you are objectively wrong my dear fellow autist.
>>
>>85624415
>3500 planes were deployed
>only 3 flew in the first hour

>only 6 destroyers were deployed over the 8 day evacuation of Dunkirk

>certainly weren't all used at once in a single fucking day
the film doesn't take place over one day. The admiral literally stays behind to make sure the French get evacuated. Are you suggesting all 300000 brits were evacuated on day one?

Where the fuck did I even imply anything like that? I just said that there was not a single point in that entire week where there were dozens of destroyers at one place at the same time.
>>
>>85624508
Air narrative takes place in one hour. Fine. Of the 3,500 aircraft deployed are you trying to suggest the only sent 3 spitfires out in the first hour whilst 6 or so german planes were deployed to bomb the beach?

The land narrative taking place over a week doesn't even make any fuckign sense since Tom Hardy literally sees all the guys in their stolen ship shot up with holes in his hour, where he also saves everyone by shooting the bomber with no fuel which supposedly only happened in one hour despite allowing all the men to evacuate over the whole week

Yes, Tom Hardy shot that bomber in his hour long flight which interconnects with the week long sea narrative. What exactly doesn't make sense here?
