admittedly i haven't seen many japanese films, so maybe you're right. Also this was the first Kurosawa film I had seen so I'm unsure how I'd feel about the rest of his work.

They are a bit slower paced than modern films, but they are worth it. You might get more appreciation for Ran after watching these.

And yeah, dont expect subtle acting, this is Japan in the 50's 60's, most of the actors are japanese stage actors and if you have ever seen a traditional japanese play, you know why it's like this in earlier japanese cinema.
