it's a 20 year old film, that was the limit if the tech then

>We couldn’t get it more than maybe 80% of where we wanted to get it, and we just ran out of time. Some of the time that we spent doing those composites over and over could have been towards this, but it wasn’t. We kept working on it. They were working overnight, and they were sleeping there, and doing whatever they could to make it better, and what we got was the best as it could be. Anyway, it was bittersweet project.

I retwached fellowship of the ring extended edition on bluray today and some stuff looks actually pretty dated.
Two things stood out I never noticed looking bad before.
1) Isildur using the ring to disappear when his group gets ambushed.
2) Frodo putting the ring down on the pedestal during the summit
Both parts got a terrible greenscreen effect going.
It looked really, really bad.

so the elves fire a single volley of arrows at the dwarves

In the book they almost fight each other until Gandalf shows up. In the movie they fight for about 5 minutes until the orcs show up. Jackson makes Thranduil look like an even bigger bitch than in the book because apparently the whole reason he hates dwarves is because they have his dead wife's necklace in their mountain.

Pretty good for 1970's CGI.

I wonder what they made the dirt out of to make it fall slower but not form clouds.

>dude lets get dozens of my thousand year old precious kin killed by some fifty year old dwarves cus muh necklace lmao

Thranduil was a terrible king and this was a terrible scene. How the fuck could those elves help the dwarves after they'd just seen their friends killed by them. Friends they've known for thousands of years, who could've lived for thousands of years more. There's a reason why elves hold the lives of their own people as incalculably precious and this extra scene basically shat all over that.

Risking and losing their precious lives in combat against unspeakable evils that want to cover the entire world in darkness is one thing. But against some bumfuck mountain jews who just hoard some jewels?
>>
>>85619991
That's actually pretty good...

I suspect a real airplane crash would look kinda surreal up close given the rather extreme physics involved. The only videos I've seen just kinda have the aircraft going "plop", but not very close, and usually obscured by trees.

Generally, with CGI, models are not measured by scale.

Hollywood used to crash cars like they cost less than the film that captured them, even on low budget television shows. ...Wonder what happened with that? Some sorta liability thing?

Cost of CG has gone down and less risky. Also that was a 1967 Jaguar E-Type and I would be pissed as hell if they managed to find one just to crash it.

They've crashed prettier cars on The Bionic Woman. Granted, they were new at the time, but if I had a nickle for every car they destroyed in movies in the 60's and 70's, I could buy a 1967 Jaguar E-Type.

Crashing models is probably even cheaper, though in this case maybe they couldn't get permission to crash the car in the LA River.

I sometimes wonder if you can go to the sea side and find dig up the car they cliffed in Rebel Without a Cause.
>>
>>85622885
I think they only used a miniature when you see the car drive off the edge from behind. Those cg dirt particle effects they added when the car is tumbling down the hill don't help to sell the effect.
>>
>>85619053
The Isildur bit in the beginning wasn't used in the theatrical film, they touched it up for the extended versions, and yea, it shows. Besides that, FoTR is GOAT. Practical effects, costumes, set pieces, characters, based Boromir, the list goes on
>>
>>85623859
>Granted, they were new at the time,
And that's my whole point. Crash all the modern dime a dozen cars you want but nowadays an E-Type is rare and valuable.

In most airplanes the windows don't match exactly to the number of rows of seats, generally there are less windows. It also doesn't exactly match any real design (for obvious reasons) so it could be any size really. There are some very small passenger planes out there.

whole movie is 1 big joke. they openly parody james bond and other spy movies, kinda breaking 4th wall. lot of brutal scenes set to cheezy music (chuch fight/massacre with maaaany innocent people set to Lynyrd-Skynyrd 'Freebird', or terrorist related raid intro set to Dire Straiths "Money for Nothing") and final fight takes place on dance floow with disco ball and flashing lights all around. Great fun if You liked Austin Powells. Lot of autoparody and breaking spy-movie clitches.

Jesus Christ he's a psychopath. He writes most of the shit he stars in, doesn't he? I'd be surprised if he hasn't at least tried to ruthlessly murder someone in cold blood.

Why didn't they just use a real deer?

I mean deer are cheap. And plentiful. And it just has to stand there eating. That's not exactly a complex scene.

Waaaiiiiit. Is this scene supposed to look like anything other than them standing shoulder to shoulder? I mean even then it's pretty blatantly obvious that Vin is using some kind of lifts or a platform. But they couldn't seriously have intended for this to be taken as some kind of nose-to-nose in-your-face confrontation right? Like this can't possibly be a failed attempt at forced perspective right?

Why would he elongate himself when diving and give them a bigger target to shoot at?

Jesus Christ. This is almost profoundly artistic in how well it embodies low-effort laziness.

Pretty good lol. Also are all these characters dead? I know the old fucker is. But what about the slimy haired git that argues with him?

These retards think greenscreen = CGI even when it's just composing separate shots.
