>>85612596
It was good but had nowhere near the depth and complexity that Dawn had. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a perfect way to deliver the message of the series, having good humans and bad humans, good apes and bad apes. In War, all apes are innocent saints who literally dindu nuffin, while all humans are war-mongering shitheads who want to torture and kill everything.

Take for instance a quote I remember from the movie, ''Then how do you explain him? [refering to the gorilla] We got 10 of those apes at our service, how do you explain that?''. I saw atleast 3 ''donkeys'', such a shame that they didn't show the rest of them in action

I guess they didn't have to pay for a bunch of lead actors aside from Woody and I guess Andy Serkis, but I can't see either of them demanding huge salaries. nah it's just the compression of the image. I watched Dawn the other day and it still looks fucking amazing. Obviously War looks better but Dawn hasn't aged at all.
Rise has though, but they were still finding their footing with the ape cgi and plus it had a different director. Some directors are much better with CGI than others, and Reeves really knows how to use it. It's not a talent thing, since even the best directors like Spielberg haven't figured out how to use CGI right. Even Peter Jackson who arguably did more for CGI than James Cameron when he made the Lord of the Rings movies (Weta was his independent visual effects house and they literally invented new ways to create CGI for armies and Gollum with a $90 million budget per film) lost his way and went too far with The Hobbit. Although, part of that is the fault of WB giving him no prep time and forcing him to turn 2 movies into 3 halfway through production.
I'm still mad that he got all of the blame for that when it was all Warner Bros fault. 4 years of pre-production on Lord of the Rings compared to like 6 months on The Hobbit? And then in the middle of shooting forcing Jackson to change two films into three?
>watching the Appendices for The Hobbit
>Jackson is fit, young, and healthy looking at the start of production

I just realised that this actually might not connect to the original movies at all. In the originals Mankind was wiped out by nuclear war. In Reeves it's a created virus.
As stated before Nova in the originals was a mating experiment and that's all. It would be beyond messed up for these movies to do that seeing as her role was expanded, and especially since she was a heartstring-pull, child character. I mean unless the human loving apes all die, you probably won't see human abuse.
Then again, maybe the universe just reset itself like it always does in these movies.

That scene was so good, the sharp turn from lighthearted to chilling was amazing.
Why are you upset about the movie flopping?
SO EMOTIONAL
>>85627903
I think it's supposed to feel like that since it's been years since the flu spread worldwide. Plus this trilogy is obviously meant to be the story of caesar who is what can be considered a first generation evolved ape. They have no need for tech so there is no way of knowing anything past San Francisco. That's why bad ape was introduces in War since it's meant to show just how little caesar knows outside of his tribe.
The "Bad Ape" comic relief moments were forced
>>85628105
>That scene was so good, the sharp turn from lighthearted to chilling was amazing.
I was listening to Matt Reeves commentary and that scene originally in the script had Koba spitting the drink at them and them wiping their eyes to reveal Koba had the gun in his hand.
but on the day of shooting Toby Kebbell had the brilliant idea of still playing dumb when going to pick the gun up and then doing that sharp turn to gunning them down.
Toby said the idea came from his experience in pubs growing up how you'd meet guys that would be the nicest guys in the world and treat you like a good mate and suddenly beat the hell out of you
it was a great choice.
>>85628172
>One scene shows him running away from Caesar and shooting blindly at him
>The other scene he turns into a comic relief character
>The other scene he shows that he also suffered a loss, and is afraid of the world outside him
Significantly better than the average ''le dumb inocent character xD!'' we see very often in movies
>Rocket never said goodbye to Caesar
The ending scene triggered me, rocket shouldve been with them
>>85628070
Apes has a worse weekend drop mate. Spidey recovered with better weekdays and now has better weekend drops as Well. Apeshit is dead bury it. Next is Dunkirk and next the Oscars.

holy shit this one was so good. it reminds me of some other piece from another movie but i cant think of it
>>85628307

>>85625533
Don't forget the 1960 Ape movie basically said humans ended up dropping nukes to try and wipe out the apes. We didn't see this happen yet.....but it's coming.
>>85628160
>>85628160
I mean more for the humans than the apes, there are like 3 lines in War about huh maybe there are more intelligent apes out there somehow but the pockets of humanity wouldn't be totally isolated.
They all had vehicles and diseases don't destroy roads, if they had food to keep hundreds of people alive they could have gotten around the country in a week or two, even if SF was the very first reestablished human outpost you could send 3/4 groups out to a few other major population centres and hear back from them in a bit more than a month. The military in War have a legit communications network for fuck sake.
It just doesn't there make sense that there could be several thousand people in that general area over the course of like 3/4 years but seemingly, based on the way everyone acts, nobody or next to nobody else beyond.
Sorry for the wall of text but this shit confuses me
>>85628172
only the one where he looks through the binoculars the wrong way felt really out of place. the others ranged from good to fine
so did koba visit caesar two times or three? the jesus symbolism with demon/devil koba tempting caesar into falling and losing his goodness would work a lot better with three visits. although you can argue the third visit was when Caesar became koba at the end and almost killed the colonel
>>85628260
>Bad Ape helps Caesar because he too lost a family
>>85628427
The last scene of War was pretty goofy.
>Maurice, we have won the War for the Planet of the Apes. I must now die because I was shot by the same man I showed mercy to, though somehow I still managed to make the trek from the base to this desert.
>>85627709
Caesar was too nice. In the end it was what cost him his life.
>>85628564
caesar managed to stay alive along enough to get the apes to a place where he felt they would be safe. as soon as he knew they were safe, he knew he would be able to die without their entire tribe collapsing. clear moses reference and although it was obvious it was very well done, especially with how well it was set up throughout the rest of the movie
if you didnt think caesar was going to die basically exactly like this since you heard they were making a third movie you might have a case of the dumbs
>>85628564
My friend said him surviving the whole trip was a bit dumb as well but I took it as He wouldn't die until he knew his people were safe.
might be unrealistic but its touching.
>>85628624
>>85628633
I get that it's a fitting him for him to see his apes finally free and safe before he finally ascends to meet James Franco in the great beyond, it just came off as a bit eh.
>>85628564
Loved the movie, but I agree with Caesar's death. It felt weak. He deserved a better death than what he got to finish his story.

I would have like it more if he makes it there safe. A simple cut and were are x amount of years in the future and Caesar is on his deathbed. He is telling his life story and we see the apes speaking more and wearing simple clothing. Then he dies peacefully in his bed.
Simple, Dignified, and earned.

i'm kinda pissed at dawn because the "good" human did everything in his power to infringe on caesar's territory, took what he could get and asked for more, and basically brought war to them by bringing along assholes with guns
>>85628172
The whole cinema was in absolute hysterics everytime bad ape was on screen

>>85629221
to be honest, Caesar was about to deny mercy to his sensitive white ass when he went apeshit. At that moment, when Caesar silenced him, he just wanted him to shut the fuck up
>>85627903
it's a microcosm.
there are pockets of human survivors scattered throughout the world, and there are ape colonies that are getting smarter and smarter throughout the world.
nobody said the last standing military force on earth perished in that avalanche. nobody. but conflicts like it are playing out globally and when everything settles down, humans might not be extinct but they sure won't be the dominant species.
>>85628233

That whole scene was the one with the most lasting impression for me right afterLEAVE HIM.
>>85629513

apes didn't make the simian flu.
apes didn't bring guns into the forest
apes didn't ambush the resistance leader and shoot his wife and son

>apes are starting a new proper civilization, with clothes, books, castes
>humans are the underclass. most are mute, some are not, but not complete savages like in 1968
>conflict centers around progressive apes wanting to give humans a decent treatment vs the more conservative, older apes (who were present during the war) wanting to exterminate the humans
>>85629513

>>85629710
>>85629710
Ape dick small
can't wait for a BR rip, some of the CGI shots in Dawn are unreal
>>85613651
Dawn also had more complexity in regards to inspirations and character motivation. Koba wasn't unjustified in his beliefs, and his slow turn from rival to villain to leader (and then the corruption of the morals Caesar inspired in them and Koba's eventual ruling through fear) was a cool nod to the USSR, Stalin and Lenin that fleshed out the dynamic of the ape faction, even if the humans were a bit basic.
WftPotA used a Vietnam War aesthetic and Heart of Darkness for inspiration and it just wasn't as complex. Caesar has a dark side, woah, deep, was about as complex as it got in terms of characters, and the apes turning away from Caesar due to a loss of hope was only present for about ten minutes of screen time. The main villainous apes are also just reacting out of fear, and The Colonel is a cardboard cut-out of a character who monologues about killing his own son and having a divine mission.
Plus the humour in WftPotA was included at some of the worst moments.
I haven't watched Rise in a while, but I think Rise and War are about on par, with Dawn just being a standout in what is probably the best trilogy of the 2010s
>>85630001

>yfw you realize you've seen Caesar grow from a baby, to a teenager, to a revolutionary, to a conflicted leader, to an ape looking to avenge his family, and finally into a legend
he has had an incredible arc (what other character in cinema recently has had this, let alone a CGI MONKEY), i'm glad War didn't pull any punches and ended his story
>>85630082
>>85629604
In the first movie they show lots of articles and news reports about sending astronauts into space for some mission, they're either using it as a link to the original or setting up for a future movie

>>85619182
>fourth film called Planet of the Apes
>basically tells the same story as the original but from the Apes' perspective
Imagine being fucking Maurice or any of the surviving apes in 20-30 years time, being old as shit, having survived so much persecution from humans, seeing them finally become a non-threat, and then an immune one appears that still has all his faculties. All the younger apes would immediately want to start exterminations because their parents died in the wars, but Maurice would know that many humans are compassionate and didn't deserve their fate.
Cue ape civil conflict and political drama.
And yes, The Fass is the man for the job
>>85630437
Fassbender is a crap actor
Why are humans attacking other humans in the first place? Shouldn't they band together to fight the apes?

Just how it was stitched all together and the level of precision Reeves had in making it exactly how he wanted.
it took WETA 9 months for that one shot to be exactly how Reeves wanted it.
there was something like 1003 passes of it before he came to the one he used in the film.

>>85615955

Yeah, the wall bit was the only really "stupid" part of the movie. Although maybe you could say the Colonol already had the new virus and was deteriorating mentally at that point. But if he got the mutation from Nova then that wouldn't make sense.

>>85628564
>gets wounded severely enough to make him collapse in a snow place
>montage of travelling to the fucking desert
>finally succumbs to his wounds after travelling what must have been days, more realistically weeks
>Maurice seems surprised that Caesar is injured after all that time travelling
War had a bunch of really, really out of place inconsistencies, like how Caesar and his A Team followed the soldiers along the beach, completely exposed, and didn't get seen, and the aforementioned avalanche that didn't happen during a firefight full of explosions, but was caused by chanting (and the soldiers stationed at the base did a morning fucking warcry too, now that I think about it)
Also it's dumb as fuck of me to get halfway through this film before realising it but apes are substantially heavier than humans and I imagine horses wouldn't be able to deal with thatI just googled it and the only real issue would be with gorillas, who are about 20lb over the recommended load for an average sized horse, so I guess that's not too bad
>>85632054

Caesar had a hard life, but Nova's will be perplexing for her. Weaker by far than everyone around her, and no more intelligent. Can't find a mate. I thinkthis movie's biggest mistake was trying too hard to link it with the original movie. That Planet of the Apes's origin has already been explained as a time fuckery loop. There is no reason to have the Humans lose their speech, no reason for the apes to go from a lush forest to a shitty dessert, no reason to name the girl Nova or Caesar's child Cornelius.
These were all forced as fuck and the movie would have been much better without them.
Debate me.
