I compare it to the Power Ranger movie.
Both were terrible, but all the callbacks and fanservice in the PR movie felt like there was one person fighting tooth and nail to keep some semblance of the original. GiTS it felt like the director found a list of top 10 moments from the anime and was checking them all off.

Pros: Great effects, design, cinematography

Cons (Rupert Sanders edition): Terrible acting, can't into basic shot selection and pacing - not in action scenes or in dialogue scenes. Script is hot garbage; Can't even get basics right like setting up the team and their relationship at the outset so that it actually means something when they get burned and save her. They don't even set up the world - the twists aren't even revelations until they are given context.

Also with Kuze, the implication is he uploads his ghost to the net but this is done with the understanding he will not be the individual he was. Secondly when the major controls other bodies remotely it is done from her primary body. The Cartesian mind body duality is a primary theme of Oshii's film

If you read the manga she is completely cybertized except for her brain and a small part of her spinal column.

So when her current cyborg body is seriously fucked up she tries to return to one of her original male cyborg bodies. (Note, this isn't her original body, just an old cyborg one.) One she had in storage since the army gave her a brand spanking new top quality military grade body. Which just so happens to be the female body we are all familiar with.

Unfortunately this body had been in storage for so long it became infested with black mold. No way in hell could The Major (BTW, the manga never tells us whether the Major is genetically male or female, but several questions between The Major and her team mates hint that she was originally born male.) be put back inside of it without her organic brain and spinal column becoming contaminated and thus kill her.

At this point in time Batou takes The Major's brain back to his place, and crams her into a random cyborg body he found in his closet when he broke up with one of his ex girlfriends. It's a rather androgynous body with long hair and painted nails. Batou and The Major chat for a little bit, and then The Major makes some sort of comment about, "So this is what it feels like to be a man." Totally freaking out Batou because it implied that his ex girlfriend may not have been a woman at all. At the end of all this it doesn't clarify whether the random cyborg body actually is male, or if The Major is just yanking Batou's leg.

I don't watch animu or read mango, so no idea how it compares to the original.

Found the movie kinda meh. It looks pretty but that's it. The whole IS SHE A REAL PERSON aspect which I guess is the point of the story, was delivered poorly and with no subtletly. Fucking Robocop treated those themes better, and I can't think of many things less subtle than Robocop.

Since that failed, all there is left is the action, but the action scenes were mediocre at best, nothing spectacular or memorable about them. The climax with the spider tank was boring shit, the damn things barely moves or does anything (was it like that in the anime film?).

ScarJo, I usually like her, but her Major was obnoxious and I didn't give a damn about her. Batou was kinda cool but was barely a character. Chief Aramaki was kinda cool but was even less of a character. The rest of the section 9 were just background noise. The woman doctor was terrible and I was glad when she died. Kuze was totally cool but then he stops being an antagonist and I didn't care anymore. The main villain was the most generic and boring shit I've seen in a while, what the fuck.

Didn't really hate the film, but in a month I probably won't remember that I watched it.

Nah, in the manga I read, way back in the nineties, it was definitely a body left behind by Batou's ex. I distinctly remember it because I was in high school back then, and my best friend loaned it to be after I saw her reading it. It was the first time I ever read a manga and it got me hooked for life. To the point that I stole the GITS DVD from my older brother when we moved years later so I could watch it whenever I wanted to.
