>In 1996, New Line Cinema greenlit a sequel to David Fincher's SE7EN, tentatively titled EI8TH. It'd feature David Mills (Brad Pitt), driven insane by the death of his wife, escaping from prison and going on a rampage, and his old partner William Sommerset (Morgan Freeman) being called to stop him. Due to psychic powers that he has suppressed since childhood, Sommerset has developed a telepathic link to Mills and races against time to stop him and prevent him from being consumed by his rage once again. Pitt and Fincher refused to participate, but Freeman actually signed, with the script being revised to focus on Sommerset fighting a psychic serial killer, before the project was eventually scrapped. The script was reworked to remove all references to SE7EN and was released in 2015 as SOLACE, starring Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell.

Scorsese was never meant to play the guy in the taxi who wants to kill his wife. The intended actor never showed up on the day of the shoot, so Scorsese offered to do the role himself. This kind of explains why we see a Scorsese cameo at the start of the film when we first see Betsy and later in the taxi.
