Leia does die in VIII, but Luke doesn't die in IX.
That may change though. Luke was supposed to die in X in the next trilogy, but Hamill wants out after IX.

They had plans to give a big role to Leia in 9 because this saga is just Kathleen Kennedy's feminist fantasy, that's why all the males are sidelined and hapless. The problem is that Carrie died, so basically all the things she should have done in9 will be done by Mary Sue. They're not planning to bring back Luke. He's probably already dead and stuck as a ghost on that island.

there's not a whole lot to inspire confidence that they'll do something new

I know the prequels traced the original trilogy pretty heavily, especially TPM, but that's no excuse to not make a new movie. Can we have a new movie?
