This franchise is beyond fucked at this point. Ridley screwed up the effort to take it in a new direction, so anything remotely like Prometheus will never happen again. Which leaves an endless loop of rehashing the first and second movie, which got old twenty years ago. There is no direction the series can move in now that won't result in box office failure.

Presumably it left them there when it suffered some calamity back home. One day the starships stopped coming, and the people in that city just sort of huddled around the docking station and worked to keep it operational in the hope that a ship might show up again someday. That might explain why there were all cheering while David hovered over them. From their POV it must have seemed like Jesus returning to pull them out of darkness and reintegrate them into a society they scarce dared to believe had ever been real. Makes his subsequent bombing all the more tragic.

Alternatively, the Engineers seem to operate on an inconceivably huge timescale. E.g. seeding Earth with life hundreds of millions of years ago and keeping tabs on its progress right up to Roman times. So another possibility is that they actually leave small colonies of their own to live and reproduce for generations on truck stop worlds so they can service the starships that fly threw their solar system once every few hundred generations.

Shit, we could have had so much fun arguing over these theories if the movie hadn't killed all interest by fucking up so hard.

Guess what? The movie was never going to be perfect. It was never going to live up to your hype. It was never going to be everything you'd ever want in a movie.

What it WAS going to be was an impossibly epic adventure filled with action and some scary shit. I just watched it for 2 hours and it was exactly that. What more do you want?

Is it simple? Sure. Is it repetitive? Maybe. Is it the same story beats and the questionable pacing and the unclear structure ? Sure, fine.

The frailty of life has always been a theme of this series, so the Engineers being easy to kill doesn't surprise me at all or strike me as inconsistent with what was built up in previous movies. Simply having one of their ships and them not knowing about it in advance really does give you a massive advantage given the way tech seems to work in this setting, and I would have expected as much even as far back as Alien.

The problem wasn't David killing them. I always knew that's what Scott would have him do. The problem is that it happened in a brief flashback that was used as a background story to set the stage for yet another xenomorph romp, which isn't what we needed or wanted. Their destruction at David's hands should have been the entire focus of the movie.
