Just watched this... very unsettling...
I understood most of it, I kind of get why it was panned (it doesn't work at all as a standalone - you have to watch the series for it to make sense), however I do think it was a stroke of genius by Lynch and one of the best things he's done.
Can we discuss this (and Season 1+2 of TP in general since I haven't watched the third yet), if that's okay?
Not sure I completely understood the beginning with Chris Isaak, or the significance of the ring, other than he was investigating the murder of Teresa Banks and disappears when he finds the ring (but where to?). And what the fuck was Bowie's character?? Also, what was the significance of the boy in the mask, and the rest of that dream sequence for that matter. Sorry if it's really obvious...

That's not why it was panned. The biggest complaint it got was that it was too little like Twin Peaks, at least that's the reason the critics gave.
The real reason however is much like you, it made people feel deeply unsettled. Twin Peaks the TV series is romanticized so much when it's about truly horrific shit and fucked up people. FWWM exposed that for what it is. It's the first scene of Blue Velvet, but just concentrating on the worms and cockroaches festering in the ground. There's no enjoyment to be taken from the story, the people the world. There's no joy, or any positive feelings to be discerned from it. It's an awful dive into a damaged child's life up until it ends and it made people who thought they liked Twin Peaks realize what they were actually enjoying and whose suffering they were exploiting for their enjoyment.
Only now, that people have finally comes to terms with that twenty years removed can they accept it. You can here more of my thoughts in the Criterion Bluray, available October 2017.

That actually makes a lot of sense, well said. I'll look out for the Criterion bluray.

What I would take from it is the following: Fantasy worlds are romanticized.
Reality is hard, mundane and can be scary as hell.
And its important to know the difference.
