The difference between SG-1 gate and the movie gate is that in the movie there are no red lights and each Chevron moves rather than just the top one.

>The difference between SG-1 gate and the movie gate is that in the movie there are no red lights and each Chevron moves rather than just the top one

wrong nigga WRONG! in the movie each chevron moves EXCEPT the top one which also looks totally different because it frames the selected symbol. you can often still see this in shots of the dialing screen in the earlier seasons when they used footage from the movie. it was also still used on DVD covers for a long time
>>
>>85566023
The Milky Way gate in my opinion is the most versatile and useful. You can literally just connect any energy source to it and manually turn the thing and it works.
The downside to the Pegasus gate, is if you don't have a DHD or it breaks, you're kinda fucked.
The destiny gate I think is visually the most interesting one, I preferred over the LED gate of Pegasus. Can you manually dial the gates from universe? The power has to be in the base because the only thing that used to dial it are those little tablet things, I don't remember episode where they had to manually dial it though.
>>
>>85567485
>You can literally just connect any energy source to it and manually turn the thing and it works

but how? without a dialing device, how does the gate know when you want it to select a symbol as you're turning the wheel manually? does it just lock on the instant you stop moving because it's probably fucking exhausting to push that big ass naquahdah ring? that seems very impractical.

Off the top of my head they do it in episodes torment of Tantalus, prisoners, and 1969, in the last one literally just hook up a bunch of truck alternators to it let it charge up. They never really explained how it knows when to lock onto a symbol, they usually just have tealc with his big arms and I guess it's assumed that he just keeps spinning it and then when it stops it locks on. If memory serves the episode 1969 shows it the best but I can't find a clip of it. I think there's another episode in season 3 when they are being held prisoner by a government faction and they use an early model of the naquadah generator the power it.

part of me hates heroes. it's not a "bad" episode, but the tone is just so off. SG-1 for the most part is basically a live action saturday morning cartoon: lots of humor, friendly banter, tons of cool gadgets and weapons, light violence, usually nobody is in any real danger, plot armor all around etc.

oh but all of a sudden we're doing this omg le horrors of war thing YOU NEVER KNOW if everyone will make it back alive - what? have we been watching the same show? yes you fucking do. just because you decide to make an exception with janet doesn't mean that I now buy that this gritty saving private ryan take on Stargate is in any way shape or form even remotely representative of the show

I appreciate that they were trying to do something different, but that shit belongs in a different show (case in point SGU) - as an episode of SG-1 it just doesn't work tonally in my opinion
>>

I thought the alien guy transported the bomb onto the ship to have Daniel deactivate it, and when he said he couldn't he just teleported it outside the ship were it blew up
>>
>>85570123
The whole thing wasn't super serious though they're actually quite a lot of funny moments in the episode. My favourite is when Adam Baldwin's team come through the gate and they're making bets on what they'll find.
In fact I think if SGU had the same balance of humor and seriousness as Heroes did it would have been a lot better.

you're 100% right but it doesn't matter. The explosion in the sky is as big as it would have been if their plan "succeeded" and the bomb blew up right under the ship. It was just a pitiful explosion and daniel should have done the right thing and let it explode in the ship to sacrifice himself and and safe the Enkorans.

Nice reminder that the wormhole effect was practical: they used a vortex made out of water with the camera on its side, that's why it looked so good, because it was actually real, they needed a fluid feel so they used one.

Also, when they went through the event horizon it was the same thing, water in a small tank, but they reversed it starting from the water and backed slowly so there wouldn't be bubbles ruining the shot.

>Use Goa'ulds to be secret protectors of the galaxy
>creation turns against and enslaves your race
>create alliance to protect the galaxy
>one slowly dies
>one goes into reclusion
>one dies out
>one gets killed off by disease/ascension

The grand alliance might be the worst advanced alliance to ever exist. They played it up like a great thing but none of them were very good for the universe, including our ancestors.

I mean with all that technology advantage, millions and millions of years, we're talking 20 to 30 million years ahead of the Asguard, to point that they had the ancient database after the remnant fucked off to next part of existence or died out and they didn't get through even a tiny fraction of it in thousands of years.

And then these 'benevolent' beings let millions, maybe even billions die in weird acts of petty retribution against other ascended beings as if they're just teenage energy beings. Leaving entire planets to get fucked over, because one person was trying to help people ascend. The entire Anubis arc utterly undermined ascended beings as a concept and honestly while it was almost as bad in SGA, at least they humanized them in a way that at least made their petty punishments make sense.

They really like powercreep in this series but they're not good at writing it. The ORI was a bunch of hamfisted religious themes with their typical bad guy model and it just did not work.

Wraith was a better idea but again they didn't know how to work it without using the bad guy model they established with the goa'uld.

Most of the problems can be explained by writing capacity being limited in terms of creativity. Such as an intelligent character can only be as intelligent as person writing it. Same thing with their bad guys. Humanizing the wraith made them better enemies so I think it worked better than the Ori, and with some tweaking the Ori could have worked.

And sadly these same problems continue with Dark Matter.

When were the goauld used as secret protectors
>>
>>85579126

It came out of the documents from the official mmo.

That was going to be true goa'uld origin. Furlings lifted them out of the swamp, they didn't do it themselves. Turned on the furlings and enslaved them.
>>
>>85578586
I agree that the Grand Alliance was wholly underdeveloped I felt like they had a completely different plan for it at the beginning. I wonder if the reason why the Asgard was so sympathetic to humans is that they were the less Advanced of the alliance. I mean we saw the nox had a flying city similar to the ancients, and they know how to build Stargates. Furling seem to be close to ancients based on the episode prisoners. I wonder if they were sympathetic to her because they related in more ways than one
>>
>>85578071
Of course I know english you silly put, but if I wanted to watch it with my parents then.
>>
>>85579752

The only reason the Nox survived is they learned balance. Ancients kept pushing boundaries until a disease started wiping them out. If they writers had been smart they would have said the Ori were the ones that created the virus as a way of undermining their rivals. But I don't think they ever even implied it.

The Nox were a smart way of doing an ancient race in that they remained aloof.

Humanizing the ancient didn't make sense because if they thought like us, shouldn't they have won? We figured out ways around all the problems a people that could do everything couldn't? Multiple times.

The only episode I wish they kept or shown was the one where they thawed the female ancient in Antarctica. She killed herself healing everyone. A selfless person that could do what nobody else could gave an implied mysticism and power that the other versions of them lacked, especially on SGA.

They kept implying technology gave them hubris but we have a lot of technology and that makes us try to be even safer. Look at how we're handling cloning, A.I, anything to do with advanced tech. It makes people act even more slowly not other way around.
>>
So what do guys think about the upcoming min series?
>>
>>85577497
There is a torrent in pirate Bay that has all the SG1 seasons. It's better than buying the DVD because they sell them in a big paper box that arrives with the discs all scratched up, or at least that's what the reviewers said.

Besides they are DVD quality, a Blu Ray would be different, no need to have 50 discs or so
>>
>>85578586
>Wraith was a better idea but again they didn't know how to work it without using the bad guy model they established with the goa'uld.

>>
>>85580647

it'll never happen.

The reason the female oriented shows like Magicians work on syfy is it basically absorbed MTV audience, not to mention wrestling.

Did you see the ratings for all of the space shows? Defiance is still their top rated one for this decade and it's been cancelled for 2 years. The Expanse gets worse ratings than Killjoys. Dark Matter being the worst of the three ratings wise.

Then they have garbage like Earp, even though people like 12 monkeys, its ratings are garbo.

and they have a bunch of filler shit, channel zero, the makeup show, last season of ghost hunters..oh krypton, I think they may have cancelled that corporate scifi show by matt/affleck, incorporated I think

They cancelled Hunters even though it was pretty decent. so thats all they have/had.

No way it will work. It doesn't have the right audience. SGO needs to be on Fox.

>>
>>85578586
Given the rather modest abilities of the writing team this show had, I think the best path they could have taken would have been to just massively expand the scope of the Goa'uld empire so that they start off fighting really small time petty System Lords. So in season 1 they would be in a desperate fight for survival against some small fry Goa'uld looking to make a name for himself by conquering some backwater with his rusty old Ha'atak cruiser that keeps breaking down. By the final season they are training rebel Jaffa at guerilla tactics so they can be more effective fighters (the myopic focus Goa'uld and their Jaffa put on spectacle and shock&awe tactics means that proper guerilla fighting techniques and equipment are the true contribution Earth has to offer to the war effort). The series ends on a hopeful note as the Go'ald Empire begins to fragment under the strain of panicked System Lords infighting each other, but there is still a long way to before they are truly overthrown(room for sequels and spinoffs).

The writers proved that they could occasionally write good Goa'uld character but that theycould not replace the Goa'uld altogether, because all of their new villain races were just Goa'uld in different makeup. So I think it would behoove them to stop trying to branch out from Goa'uld storylines and focus on making the villains they already have more interesting and give each individual a little more unique characterization.
>>
>>85581151

I still think they should change the name back. Syfy is such a shit name.

>>85581451

I think you have the write idea. They needed to stop focusing on powercreep and orient the story to more personal victories and losses in terms of world building.

Having such a long term plan for a low budget showtime show would have been dumb. They were never sure if they'd be renewed for another season, they had to have felt under pressure to give the audience the good stuff right away
>>
>>85581674
Good point. I keep forgetting the humble origins of this show and what shaky ground it stood on for a long time.
>>
>>85581674

I think you're misplacing your thoughts anon. They had a larger variety of sets and locations in the first 5 seasons and they had decent vfx for late 90s televsion.

I highly doubt that show was low budget because they went into syndication way ahead of time with scifi channel. That tells me the show was much more expensive than you think.

It's the reason Showtime cut ties with the show because more people were watching it on scifi channel than showtime.

But that's the best one and Channel Zero is the one with the most potential to grow if the producers got their head out of their asses and went for a more SCP route.
I don't think anything will capture the magic of SG-1 but Dark Matter comes close.

>>85581824

The current ratings winner is The Magicians. Your show has no fucking chance once they cancel The Expanse and they prematurely end Killjoys.
>>
>>85581751
Low budget was a bad way to put it yeah. Still, nobody sane would have expected it to last 10 seasons, 2 movies, plus like 8 more seasons spread among spin offs
>>
>>85581975

That I agree with but for the first few years, it was probably one of the more expensive shows. You don't go into syndication in the first couple of years unless you really need to boost your ROI

It effectively killed the brand on showtime and showtime did it because they needed the money and content more than brand washout from being on other channels so early

I think they were worried about importing too much farscape and I think that was a mistake and a misuse of both actors. They have great chemistry and they never used it.

They just brought them in as ringers since RDJ fucked off.

It was okay for what it was but nothing like the middle seasons.

It was a fucking revelation that was - or could have been - damn close in importance to the event of aqcuiring the entirety of Asgard archives.

I agree, I just wish the network didn't force out Weir's actress, because honestly Carter as a commander didn't work and woolsey had maybe 1 or 2 good episodes. The court stuff at the end and base invasion with RDJ

Weir's chemistry with Shep made the series different and distinct.

I like Ronon but honestly I think he was a mistake and basically copying the teal'c thing which again a mistake. Teyla was a massive mistake but everyone already knows that.

her best episode was when she played a wraith and honestly that made me wish she played a good wraith instead. It would have been different and helped explain her bad acting at the same time.

Sort of like having a sexy todd.
>>
>>85582469

I did like DM before they destroyed 4's character, killed off 1 twice, and made 3 default male protagonist.

It ruined all of their characters in small ways and turned it into more girlpower hour with complimentary added blackhardbitch model 2 this season, android/5/2 already, it's just too much.

KJ has some of that but it's balanced out by the fact she is lovestuck on Jimmy olsen so it makes it more palatable.

>>85582436

Even with the new netflix deal it won't last. We don't have netflix numbers but it's at about the same cost as Marco Polo and they cancelled that shit and that show was actually improving.

Miller is gone bro, that show is going to die hard.

Ronon was great, better than Teal'c (I was never a big fan of Teal'c, although I appreciate his role in the story as a whole.).
Teyla was okay. She sort of turned into a joke, constantly talking about her people. As a character, she did serve a role in the overall story by ensuring that the team was connected to the people of the new galaxy.

they had a contract with carter's actress and they had to shove her somewhere till they got sanctuary ready, and they told that series to them and finished her contract with that.

You can even see behind the scenes stuff that they knew it wouldn't work but they bowed to the network, even carter's actress knew it was shitty.

So weir got the boot, which is why she didn't want to come back for guest appearances in season 4. it destroyed my caring in the show but I wasn't aware of all behind the scenes shit going on just that she was written out of the show in a shitty way.

>They were never sure if they'd be renewed for another season

Actually they were, up until season 5. Showtime renewed them for a second season, before the first had ended, then renewed them fora 3rd and 4th before they were even half way through season 2. They renewed for a season 5 sometime between season 3 and 4 and notified the producers that they wouldn't be picking up a 6th season pretty early on during season 5 runs.
Showtime was cool though and said that they could take the series to another network if they wanted, so they took it to the Sci-Fi channel, who said they'd just have a single season. From then on it became a point of not knowing if there would be another season until the end.

See I call bullshit on her not knowing about the Stargate and what it did.
In the movie, everyone but Danial seems to know what the gates going to do, before he figured out how to work it.
I mean, when Cathrine asks Jack why he's been sent to oversee them, he says "I'm here in case you succeed." Fuck, Jack had orders before it was even turned on to blow shit up.
It's said in the movie that Cathrine and her team were working on how to turn it on for 2 years, with one of them even referring to the gate as a "device". There's also the fact that they have computers set up to track wormholes and dematerialization.
And in the series proper, Carter mentions it taking 15 years to build the Earths dailing computer.
They fucking knew what the gate was.

In one episode script he was addressed by the wrong rank, but the air force demanded the writers to change it to reflect the respect Walter's rank deserved.

The air force really liked Stargate. The first few episodes some uniforms etc weren't correct and then they became correct. Stargate may not be so realistic but it was quite authentic in some aspects. Don't know how many other shows have real generals acting on it and even borrowing a nuclear sub to the show with Anderson acting on it while it's crew members acted as themselves. The air force probably has SG1 to thank for lots of its recruits.

>I so badly wanted Junior to become a character but they'd written themselves into a corner with the goa'uld genetic memory. He would've had to be an antagonist

I don't think so, there could be ways around it.
Like in summit we find out that the System Lords eat symbiotes as some sort of weird population control. It could be retconned that as a further control, only a small number of symbiotes are given access to the full genetic memories and these are the ones that will go on to be Goa'ulds and the rest (like Junior) only get a limited version.
Or alternatively they could have made it so that 'The Changeling' not only had an effect on Teal'c and Bra'tac, but also on Junior.

>Teal'c's post-symbiote character development was worth losing junior
That could have been kept, Junior would have been too weak to keep Teal'c alive, so he'd go on Tretonin.

I hate MMOs but I have mixed feelings about this one falling through. It would have been a good setting for a game and if I had to wait for the MMO to give way to single player spinoffs it might have been worth it. On the other hand, games made as tie-ins for tv shows and movies invariably suck.

The set design was the only thing I would consider very good about sgu, some parts are on par with Atlantis some parts are better than Atlantis. I really dug the gate design I just wish they'd will little bit more creative with the symbols on it. Maybe have them be Ancient. It's a shame we never got to see them try to manually dial those gates

If you want watch CHildren of the Gods then go to like episode 5 and watch from there. Children of the Gods is the pilot and the audience realizes why Daniel has a hard on to find his wife and straight up she looks clean. The first few episodes are pretty weak but they pick up pretty quickly past season 1

You should start with SG-1 because of all the world building in that show. All the tech that they had in latter seasons you can point to an episode(s) where it was discovered or developed,You really get to feel like you are watching the growth of a space-faring civilization. So when they finally get to making these advanced ships, you can look at them and see all the inspiration from previous ships, all the histories and backstories of all the different reactors, weapons, and even down to the metal the ships are made from.

One or two Bad episodes a season doesn't make the whole season bad. Some of my favorite episodes are in season 1and 2. The only issue is that it's a bit more Monster of the week / X-Files less World building, but that's mostly early season 1.

by ratings Dark Matter is above The Expanse and unbelievable but slightly under Killjoy.

>I like Dark Matter for some inexplicable reason.
It's legit a great show. In tone, it's the closest modern day equivalent of SG1.
>>
>>85599275
What is the plot of Dark Matters, one of these threads suggested I watch Travelers and I can't get into it. Can't stand characters having to lie about their identity
>>
>>85599491
space pirate like crew lose their memories, identity, when they find out who they were, they don't want to get it back, instead they want to be good guys. Though, their past don't let them rest, so they fall in various adventurous and also lethal situations. The world is built pretty fastforward, with various scifi clichés (i won't even make examles, it would only spoil them), but even so fun to watch.
All this with Jodelle (Silent Hill, young Orici from SG1, young princess from SGA), familiar faces from Stargate, producers from Stargate, etc)
>>
>>85599491
Travelers is so much more than that though. Most of the time pretending to be modern day losers is secondary to the particular mission of the episode.
