The end of Season 3 was a bit disappointing. The entire time Swearengen is constantly trying to figure out Hearst's motivations and why the man does what he does. Finally we discover it's just that Hearst is a common bully who happens to be incredibly rich and powerful and he just acts out because he can, not because he's some Machiavellian deep thinker.

Well yeah, that's just realistic. There's nothing particularly deep about most oligarchs. Most of what they do, they do because they want to do it and can get away with it.
