can be considered pretentious, especially when he started getting really political in the late 60s. he also soiled anna karina's purity.
still, everyone should watch his films.

You're under a misapprehension here. In Europe, the middle class (the actual middle class, not white-collar serfs called "middle class" by politicians who want to flatter their deluded self-image) never disdained cinema the way they did in the English-speaking world, so movies got made for them. Godard isn't for people who are impressed by literary references, he's for people who take them in stride.

That's the thing, he's not really the best director to namedrop in order to look smart. Only watched Pierrot le fou and Vivre sa vie so far but both movies were really cinematic, fun and easy to watch.

Been avoiding him for years because of movie hipsters and I really shouldn't have.
