When Sidious killed Plagueis, Plagueis inserted himself into Schmi and allowed himself to remain dormant in Anakin Skywalker. Sidious knew this and took Anakin as his apprentice. In a twist of fate, Anakin eventually killed Sidious, and in the process died shortly after. The body was burned by Anakin's estranged son, but after Anakin became one with the force, Plagueis took the now burned body back, removing the newly unnecessary suit of armor for a more regal appearance that would suit him as the supreme leader of the first order.
