The movie just kept me thoroughly engaged from start to finish. I loved every scene and every build up. Casey was amazing. I found it to be an incredibly heartbreaking film, all the while still maintaining a somewhat light tone.

Well surrealism is meant to be dream like. In your dream's, you experience familiar things where something is off. This perfectly describes Lynch's directing style. I personally enjoy mediation, and Lynch himself practices transcendental meditation. In Eraserhead I think Lynch created a dream like ascetic meditative trance. This trance I'm talking about is extremely difficult to reach through meditation, but capturing it through art is something I find remarkable.

Agreed. The reason I rank it so high is because I think it would be an extremely difficult to pull off. The flashbacks were executed well, the acting was first rate (both Affleck and Williams had their best), but more importantly the story would be really hard to pull off as a director. As you said, tragic plot, but the comedic parts weren't cheezy but fit in really well.

My guess would have been you see a little bit of Lee Chandler in yourself?

I figured this, as I am one myself. I had a fairly serious event occur in my life, not as bad as Lee's, but my brother helped me out much in the same way, let alone the alcohol abuse. Well over that now, but the plot also really resonated with me personally. Even without that, I think the movie was just so damn good and hit a lot of nuanced behaviour - the relationship between Lee and his nephew really stood out.

My favourite film is local hero. I'm over 40.
