Probably not. Hypoxia isn't usually a problem until upwards of 15000 MSL. Even then, you can detect the early stages of hypoxia and either descend or put the oxygen back on.

He was in enemy territory and he knew it. Trying to escape risks getting shot and we don't know how far he is from the Allied controlled part of the beach.

Surrendering is the best option if you want to live. He was an Officer and captured officers were treated pretty fucking well at that point in the war.
