Not California, but my options are either $700-1000 rent in a shitty building with a 3 hour commute to work every day because of traffic. Or $1500, in a new quiet building with more amenities and live right down the street from my office and only need my car for entertainment purposes.

The money I save on gas, wear and tear on my car, and the fact that I get an extra 15 hours a week to myself is worth paying the extra $500.
