Since David killed everyone, he and shaw were alone on the planet. I don't know if a Synthetic needs food or gets his energy from somehow else, but one thing is for sure: shaw needed food to live. So it was probably planted by her, or by david, or by both. Since we know that David turned evil and did some horrific things to shaw, basically using her as to experiment with dna manipulation and probably impregnating her with the black go over and over again to create this proto-alien experiments, even maybe the eggs, he needed her to feed and survive, because if she died, he would have no birth mashine for his experiments.
