The problem with modern who is they don't know their audience - they cater to the online/twitter/tumblr/youtube reactor community, who make up around 20% of the fanbase at most.

This casting may kill the show. Which could be a good thing. It's stale at the moment. They should put it on another hiatus, so we can all write fanfictions and consider them canon.

Anecdotal evidence. I've also encountered a lot of people who are willing to start watching the show now that there's a female Doctor. Which I think is pretty weird, honestly, because in an ideal situation, the Doctor's gender shouldn't affect the show much at all... in which case, if they were uninterested in watching it beforehand, why should they suddenly be now?

Anyways, it's all just speculation at the moment - we won't have a good indication of how many people might return/keep watching for Jodie until at least the Christmas special (and even then, people mightn't tune in until the start of the new series).
