To be fair his body is just badly held together chunks by the end. Loads of wear and tear that he was putting his body through against a clearly diminished regenerative ability. His bones might be adamantium but there's plenty of space between them to push through too.

Nope. He theorised it himself. I like to think he had a cancer brought on from his body just regenerating too damn quick. After all, that's basically what a tumour is. It's an over abundance of cells that you can either let spread or you can cut it out. He chose the former because he was tired of living. Adamantium killing him is gay. His own regenerative abilities eventually being the very thing that cause his demise is pottery.
