Rick and Morty is a funny show but I'm afraid they're appealing to the Reddit fanbase, no memes. The emphasis on Rick being the smartest guy ever, the nihilistic themes being played up, lorefaggotry, even in the ads they said "How can a sho this smart be this dumb?".
Stop. It has some clever ideas but it's not a show I would call genuinely intelligent. They need to just focus on being funny and not cave in to what the cancerous fanbase wants. Season 1 was great and they should copy it's success, the 3rd season opener concerned me

just watched the series two weeks ago. as someone whose favorite television/movie genre is science fiction, the show could be a lot better.

usually they end up unabashedly ripping sci-fi concepts from other movies and television shows (micro-verse battery is from Men in Black, dreams episode is from Inception, anatomy park is from Futurama/Osmosis Jones, etc), and when they don't do this they employ simple multiplicative plots (council of ricks is the worst offender of this imo). the characters are supposed to be science fiction types, but usually they are fantasy characters. the show's aliens honestly remind me of characters from Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland more than characters from Farscape or Star Wars.

My problem with this show isn't even the sociopolitical undertones. It's that instead of trying to make jokes, the writers try to make memes, they think of a joke and then reuse it and force it down your throat throughout the course of an episode/season.

The fans encourage this by being the type of people that repeat quotes immediately after hearing them, they want the zinger one liners that they can put on shirts to prove that they are fans of the show.

I never got why everyone seems to love the show quite honesty, and I'm not saying it just to try and be contrarian or whatever.

To me it's formulaic as fuck

>They work out in the end

And that's the basic structure of every episode, and even every joke. It's not like classic Simpsons (most obvious example, I know), because it's never comfortable enough to sway from those formulaic tropes that its invented for itself.

I don't know, maybe it's down to me, but there's only so many times you can see Rick bumbling his words and burping before you start to think they're really riding this joke into the ground. And that's episode 1.
