I feel like it would be worse because I could see it being the decision of the studio and thus more of a committee decision rather than a singular filmmaker, or filmmaking team, taking their time to develop the story and their approach and then pitching it multiple studios. The biggest difference between the quality of LOTR to The Hobbit, in my opinion, was pre-production time. This includes the years of script development and ideas before the pitch is finally made and green lit.

The Hobbit movies are better than people give them credit for. Jackson had to turn 1 children's book into 3 PG-13 movies with less prep time than he had for LOTR.

I've more sympathy for Jackson than I used to have regarding the Hobbit trilogy when I found out how how messy the production was.

I actually prefer the Hobbit to LOTR
LOTR is full of cut content and essentially an empty world. Add in deus ex machina plot events (like the ghost army winning that battle) and overpowered Gary Stus (*Legolas kills an elephant with like 20 men* Gimli:"that only counts as one" hahaha)

In contrast, the Hobbit feels like an adventure across the lands meeting the different inhabitants of middle-earth. It feels populated. And nothing's missing. It's far from perfect and the cgi is lacking in places, but it's a better-told story.
And I think it retroactively makes the LOTR films better

The movies were just as bad as people say they are. The Hobbit is not a fantasy epic, it is a comfy children's story that adults can enjoy too. Including all the stuff from the "Hobbit+" by Tolkien was dumb. But you can't blame Jackson for it. Jackson was not the reason why the movies were bad, he was hired to finish it not reshoot the entire thing.
