My mother is really into this show. I was surprised to hear Jason Bateman is in a serious show, I've literally never heard of him being in anything that isn't a comedy before now.
>>
>>85482868

Most of his roles thus far have been bit pieces on obscure shows. He also has a recurring gig in Mercy Street and Power. As he gets more comfortable in front of a camera I imagine the quality of his acting will improve.
>>
>>85482995

I suggest you watch The Gift, it is probably his most memorable 'serious' role.

Only on episode 3 but this shit is pure Kino. Fucking so good and I'm very impressed that Bateman could pull off a serious role and he directed most of the episodes. Very impressive.

Also this show shouldn't really be compared to Breaking Bad, it's only similarities is Mexican cartel and middle class working family man in too deep. But unlike Breaking Bad, in Ozark the charscters knows the risk and the dangers but still chose the life in order to help the kids.

Such a shame there isn't more threads on this, best original from Netflix since Bloodlines.

There have been quite long threads about this but the problem often with Netflix shows are that people watch them in their own time rather than once a week so you can have big threads and on-going generals.
>>
>>85486285
Either way it deserves more atrention. Everyone I have introduced to the show say it's amazing. It doesn't treat it's audience as stupid either.

Also it's just a good show in general. No bullshit pandering from what I have seen and i like it's use of hanging on lots of the scenes, looks very stylish.

>>
I'm somewhere around episode 5 right now and while I'll follow the season to the end, it's no particularly good. First and foremost, the Soderbergh style writing ... and also long stretches of "this is how the system works" monologue-type exposition. Like those idiotic movies where Margot Robbie explains something to you in a bathtub, you fucking idiot. It's really surface level stuff where everything comes off some sort of magical charisma resolution aka lack of character development so you never know how someone's gonna react to Marty's verbosity. Not that other characters aren't verbose, it seems even the simpletons have some deep seated cunning that will make them willing to actually listen to those overwrought sentences.

And of course it's a very small place that's fleshed out in a way that just doesn't make sense. Too much stuff is going on for it to be even remotely viable. Dukes of Hazard offered a more coherent outlaw scene.

But the only thing that really irked me so far is the killing with the syringe. These kind of hitman/commando style scenes really stoop the series down to comic book level writing / scening and fuck any immersion they were going for just because the manchild retard writing the scene thought it looks cool. It's Vince Gilligan level shit flinging after BB season 2. Don't fucking jump the shark before you get in the water.
>>
>>85487145
All of them pretty big plot points. Do you know what bullshit pandering even means when talking about tv show?

I had to laugh at that. You already have a cuckold main character, a criminal mastermind mary sue teenage girl, a "dont slut shame me, its 2017" 15 year old who fucks a chad and a black FBI agent.

>>
>>85481579
Just finished it, it's decent but it's got nothing on the work of based Vince.

I thought it was pretty dumb the whole thing started because Del suspected they were stealing just because Bruce was quiet, then he stops caring about his missing man Garcia at the end because of a read on Marty also I'm pretty sure a cartel doesn't just "let it go" that you likely killed one of their guys like there's no way they don't kill Marty there.
>>
>>85490533
So the kid can kill the evil people and cover that part of the viewer demographic

Why are people comparing this to Breaking Bad? Because it has a cartel in it? The other is a serious prestige drama, the other is a comedic drama. Ozark is a Ray Donovan-tier show and that's fine. Not every show has to reach mythological dimensions of fiction.

It's okay. But I find the characters to be a little implausible. I'm in episode 3, and it made me cringe when batemans daughter hits that dope. It's been distractive that the characters are paper thin. Why should I care what is happening to them? Anyone else feels this?

I like the plot and twists tho.
>>
>>85481579
I'm only 2 eps in but I like it very much so far. Been crushing on the blond cutie since Americans, and Batemen's always felt like he deserved to be an A or B-lister instead of an ensemble straight man.

My only problem/not problem is that the dialogue is just too clever. There's no fucking way that normal people in the situations they're in would be able to come up with this shit. That said, it's like a verbal 5000-piece puzzle being put together in front of your eyes and ears with each conversation, so it's still really entertaining to watch.

watching the finale right now. so far it's stupid as shit.
just tell the mexican guy to get rid of the old fart, his wife and the ash dude. that's it, done.
also, why the fuck did Bateman tell his family to leave, if he went to the redneck with a plan of how to calm him down, which seemed to work (this part wasn't clear, because the old fucker is uncapable of talking straight)
so the whole scene in the house with the kid with the gun and the old man coming to rescue is undercut by the fact that the whole situation was unneccessary.

But anon, hillbillies were in the ye olde woods before the Universe, the Cartel has no power in their magical realm.
>>
>>85492252
They're both about ordinary family men getting in over their heads with criminals anon. It's like breaking bad only Marty is a much nicer person than Walter ever was though that really makes his reasons for joining in less believable I mean we see in the flashback episode him and his wife agree to do this shit basically because "why not?!" which is pretty dumb.
>>

it's more believable if anything. There's no real "muh something" driving people to do some crazy shit. A teacher who has cancer decides to be a drug dealer? Lmao.

This is a normal guy who's very, very good at his job and gets opportunity to make shitload of money in that said job.
>>

>>
>>85500821

truly plebist of plebs, cancer just gave him an excuse.

also normal people don't just decide to work with mexican drug dealers because normal people are terrified of them. A normal person would have never gone to that resort even.
>>
>>85482709

>>
>>85501006
>normal people are terrified of them.

Bateman is terrified of them, the whole series is his fear they will come and kill his family. He just thought he was good enough to never be on their bad sides. It's a running theme of him expecting people to be as rational as he is.
>>
>>85484504

Anon no rational person would accept a job where they know the punishment for failure is a brutal death for them and their entire family unless they had to for some reason. He didn't have to, they were fine, it was literally "hmmm my marrige is in a slump, oh I know lets go to that drug dealers resort! and then hey maybe I'll work for him lol won't that be a kick!"

Walter's situation was more believable because he wasn't rational or normal. The show made it clear early on that beneath his "ordinary suburban family man" exterior was a mountain of suppressed anger, jealousy, and pride.
>>
>>85500907
millenial self insert
>>
>>85501344
But he knew how good he was and knew there was no way it would fail, unless someone talked. The only reason things went wrong was because he partner stole from them ,something that obviously completely blindsided him. Bateman's charterer is a fixer, someone who has all the answers and is competent as long as other people play ball.

Also he had like 8 million before he had to relocate, money is a pretty good motivator.
>>
>>85501461
Anon I'm sorry but you're just wrong. A normal person would not take that job no matter how good they are at what they do and they made it seem in the show like they pretty much agreed to do it cause they thought it'd be fun and spice things up.
>>
>>85501567

Soooo does this show eventually become a gang war between hillbillies and the Mexican cartels? Cuz that would be awesome. On episode 4 now

I'm glad this thread went somewhere. I've only seen two episodes so far but am really enjoying it.
>>
I hope the hillbilly mafia wife dies horribly

She legit would have been the perfect Tulip for Preacher if she were older. But let's be honest, Tulip is the least of that show's problem.
>>

Tulip is the main problem of that show, she is unbearable to watch.

she's beautiful., why are people calling her a tranny?

It brings me back every time his character says anything like 'uhhh' or 'yeeeah, you know what?' Like how they set up the gags on Arrested Development
Also the episode where he was riding his bike and got hit by the car

>they wasted an extremely well written excuse to kill off the wife early on

Great so far, I just hope it the writers don't feel the need to bog down the main story-line with giving her a side-plot.

Seeing the total disregard Marty's wife had for their marriage and the lengths he goes to in order to provide for his family really activated my almonds. It was a great way to set the character up and make her unlikable from the very first episode though.
>>
I was really annoyed by the wife and her retarded antics. Also why do they make her say "fuck" so many times. And the whole "le evil hill billy mafia" and "mastermind 19 year old girl" shit.

7/10. Average show. Nothing spectacular.

On episode 4. When she so smugly asked what he did for the family that day, how he didn't just jump up from that chair and beat her around, I'll never know.

Why do no shows ever have the balls to be one series long and be done with it (eg Homeland)? This would have been 10/10 if it ended with Marty getting killed, his family on the run again, the preacher's wife and kid dying thanks to him, maybe even the old guy in the basement getting shot in anger by Petty who storms in as a last desperate bid to catch Marty before the criminals do.

Now all we've got is some shitty second season where everything's going to be the same, he has to launder wow even more money with some epic new mexican handler, FBI is still after him and he'll meet some zany new lake characters.

It was honestly fantastic and well written, and it did a good job of avoiding common tropes.

My only problem is that the whole psycho-sexual-familial-narco genre is extremely saturated and overdone at this point. I don't understand why half the shows on TV are about the exact same shit.

I also disliked Batemen's character. I'm sick of the autistic "has an answer for everything" archetype. I liked how Martin seemed autistic and it was heavily implied that the son was too.
